Battery Drain.

I have been away for 6 months and the battery is flat. The car is lpg converted 1.4 aua but the negative terminal is under the lpg gas tank. I am charging it now with a negative 8amp cable clamped to the engine lift point. For the future can I very carefully disconnect the positive to stop drain ? thanks

You can do, but note it's always best to disconnect ground (negative) 'first' before disconnecting positive. And the reverse when reconnecting battery, always connect negative 'last'.
You just have to be 100% careful not to short the positive to ground and in your case not to short the positive to the LPG tank which will be grounded.

You could get a trickle charger which plugs into cigarette lighter to keep battery charged, they even do a solar panel version these days.

Thx Sarge - I could probably have connected the charger to the negative battery terminal but was scared of the lpg tank proximity. I may be able to put a battery isolator in the neg cable as it is visible. The cig lighter charger is a good idea thx.

Get a cigarette lighter plug, and connect it to the charger. I have a cigarette lighter plug on my charger instead of crock clips. So convenient, and safe for those who's hand is not as steady as it was!

Thx Plastic Mac .I ordered one with 15amp cable yesterday I Was surprised how cheap they are. I also ordered a solar panel charger as my other car drains if not used for 10days or so. I had to pump up a wheel by foot pump as the cig lighter has no power so another job lol

Thx guys for the tip on the cig lighter socket and a smart charger. Back in Uk after 7 months and the battery is topped up -the car started first touch .

Solar chargers sold for cars are nearly always not up to the job. Placing it under the windscreen will lose about 60% of the output. For the darkest days of winter, you need at least 20w, 30w would be better.
