My Merc did this for a while until it completely failed. I could watch the alternator voltage on the dashboard and when it did fail it put 19V through the electrical system.
I replaced the alternator but as you can imagine have no end of engine management issues to sort out.
My advice would be get it fixed as soon as you can.
