Bench seat Q.

OK, we have to discuss...

How easy is it to fit a bench seat in my 54 plate A2 which has currently a two/split seat arrangement. I guess its a waiting game for a s/hand interior matching solution but where are the best deals for the new components.

We basically require it for visits to the Outlaws and additional kiddie (not ours!)factor.

This could be a make or break as I want to keep the A2 but Mrs Doctor is getting twitchy with the three year mark looming!

Its the only downer on the car but if I can sort it I can dispel the looking for another car spectre!

Thanks for that spike! Once I noticed the lack of replies I did a search (should have done it in the first place:rolleyes: )

I was concerned about the posts regarding legality of the car being modified to five seat...Insurance are only looking at items to waiver their responsibilty.

I will still investigate further.

I guess I shall have to strap the mother in law to the roof rack or buy a hook and trailer;)

I have a bench seat and the middle seat isn't that wide, especially with two car seats in the back, and probably isn't much use anyway, unless the mother in law is very thin. Oh and it rattles like mad (both the seat and the mother in law). Three headrests look nice and make it appear that its a proper 5 seater! Yeah right.

Does anyone know of a "third person" seatbelt accessory, I guess it would be a waist belt that attached itself to the existing buckles, rather like the strap in an aircraft for children on laps:confused: just a thought!

Dont think that would work! The mountings wouldn't be designed to take the load of two people in a crash, surely?

Hi doctor

The Audi parts list shows a centre lap belt is available. There are no extra brackets to go with it so its not clear how it fits. Perhaps someone with the bench seat could provide some photos.

I'll try to take a look in the morning, when it's light!

Hi GrayB, your a gent
There has been much interest in a bench seat conversion so some pics of the lap belt and seat hinge fittings would be most useful.
Any volunteers to do a fitting guide if the conversion is feasible

Cheers Spike

Yes - we are divided into two camps. People with 4 seaters wanting 5 and people with 5 seaters who would prefer the flexibility of easily being able to remove a single seat.

I have a rear bench and would like to swap it for two individual rear seats. The bench seat comes complete with the seatbelt. It is in the light grey Sport trim.

If anyone is seriously interested I am sure we couldwork out swapping over of front brackets.

Haven't managed to take the photos today - car covered in snow, so not a very appealing prospect! Also some minor problems to deal with - like snowed in employees etc. etc. The A2 is booked in for it's cambelt tomorrow so I should be able to do the photos then. Sorry for the delay...

Any luck with those photos GrayB:) This has me interested, whether it might be a repositioning of seatbelt arrangement rather than a new seat.

Ok, so I 've managed to get the A2 away from my partner long enough to take some photos!

The centre lap belt is attached to the seat alone - which explains why the seat is so heavy I guess. The sea back folds down and then you pull the handle in the centre of the seat base (from in the boot) to release the locking pins, which move towards the centre of the car to come out of the keyhole shaped holes (the back rest has to be pushed down firmly to enable the release mechanism to work).

Replacing the seat also requires a firm push down on the seat to get the pins to click back into place.

I hope this is clearer now....

Very interesting that you have only a lap belt for the centre seat, as my 2004 tdise has a full diagonal and lap belt ,obviously audi must have changed their specification at some point.
