Bert - 1.4Tdi//FSi Colour Storm OSS

on the Gearbox, different position on the petrol and diesel gearboxes from memory, I think the Diesel switch is at the front of the gearbox and the petrol near the back (but this is from memory)

The reversing switch on TDI gearboxes is located very close to the selector tower. It dives into the gearbox from above at roughly a 45° angle.

If you disconnect its electrical connector and the reversing lights switch off, you know you've found the problem. :)

Cheers,

Tom

Bit of an update, but not with Bert for a change...

Although he now does have a full set of mudflaps thanks to Rich2508 coming through when I was looking for 1 :)

I've long liked the Colour Storm models and after being at AITP, seeing all the CS models in a row the cogs set to turning about purchasing one. I also really wanted an OpenSky system, as it's something I can never retrofit to my daily driver A2. I had a lengthy chat with MrBroons about his beautiful Imola Yellow example but unfortunately my budget just wont stretch that far (public sector worker on a 7 year pay freeze )

After lots of searching on the usual places I came across one...

1.6 FSi, Runs fine till warm, then develops a misfire
Scuff to front bumper
Drivers wing mirror needs replacing
2 cigarette burns to drivers seat ( :( )
Working OpenSky

After a lengthy chat with the owner I had discovered they were also A2 enthusiasts, owning one of each of the more popular colour storm colours, going all the way to Ireland to get their Imola Yellow example. I also learned that this car was going to fall within my budget (I did mention the forum but I don't think they're very computer minded)

A deal was struck and the seller was confident in his description of the car that we agreed instead of a 5 hour round trip for me to view the car, he arranged for it to be transported down to me and once I had inspected it I would pay him in full. So I effectively bought the car blind, the Wife thought I was mad! It arrived last night and was exactly as described.

The scuff to the front bumper

I'm under strict instructions from the wife that I'm not to start toying with it till the garage is cleared out so it doesn't fill the driveway, so I've spent most of today so far doing that (typical that the tip is shut on a Wednesday around here!)

So far I've identified the following:

  • Front bumper scuff
  • Drivers wing mirror needs complete replacement
  • Non OEM stereo (will swap from Bert when I get a replacement for him without worn buttons)
  • One key requires a new battery
  • OpenSky although fully working looks like the runners could do with a clean/lube
  • Engine problem to investigate
- I'm in 2 minds about this, I'm considering buying an engine from Sarge and just swapping them over, or investigating it further. I know the coil packs have been changed and that's not fixed it but perhaps I'll have the fault codes read and go from there. Engine is on 137k

  • OEM Wiper blade required
  • Drivers headlamp is misting
  • Wheels require refurb/replacement
  • Drivers seat needs repairing/replacing

I've got a few ideas for some of these things but there is no rush, I'll be concentrating on the engine issues first, and Bert still needs a few things till I can focus fully on this car. For now though, a full wash and clean is on the cards, and some new number plates so I can fit my A2OC plate holders.

So what did I pay?? £650, which I'm quite happy with considering most of the jobs it requires are only cosmetic

I believe it's bad luck not to name a car, so I've settled on Renata which is an Italian girls name, meaning Reborn. It seems quite fitting

If you've read my waffle this far well done! :p I'll get some nicer pictures when time allows, but for now I'm glad to be joining the Colour Storm/OpenSky club

ps, is anyone in the midlands available to come and read my fault codes with VCDS please?

pps, FORUM MODS would it be possible to edit my thread title please to reflect the new car? I tried to edit it and it wont display in the forum list.

I think I saw that car on eBay? Looks like a bargain especially if the open sky is functioning. I payed £400 for ours but with broken sky and no MOT.
Surely the engine can be sorted , it's not huge mileage compared to some on here.
Good luck.

Hi Matt,

I found the following on the Ross Tech website and believe it could help with your diagnosis of the engine troubles...

Fault Code 05417: FSI Engine Detected: Faulty Since Inception. Implausibly Unreliable.

Possible Symptoms

  • Won't Start
  • Won't Drive
  • Sounds Worryingly Rough
  • Every Possible Warning Light On
  • Accelerates Like an Asthmatic Tractor
  • Coolant All Over Your Driveway
  • Obvious Smell of Petrol
  • Feelings of Despair
Possible Causes

  • Incorrect Engine Choice Made by Original Purchaser
  • Failed Engine Parts. Yep, All of Them
  • 95RON Petrol Used Once 6 Years Ago
Possible Solutions

  • Play Parts Darts. Replace Engine Parts until Symptoms Cease
  • Fit a Different Engine
  • Convert into Garden Shed, Trailer or Children's Climbing Frame
  • Give Up and Sell Car

Sorry, I couldn't resist. FSI owners, please forgive me. :)

1.6 FSi, Runs fine till warm, then develops a misfire
I'd bet on injectors...
Very nice car BTW ! FSI storm with OpenSky = in my opinion, THE iconic A2 (along with the 1.2 TDI)

@timmus : funny and very true :)
The "give up" option is not a valid one, if you experienced once an FSI running well with all its horses and (or rather "or" because you can't have both at the same time) its fuel economy ;)

Edwrai, thanks for the offer on the diagnostics. :) I should have Timmus coming to remap my TDi in the next few weeks so I think he'll be reading the fault codes for me then, but if things change I'd love to take you up on the offer.

FBI, thanks for the kind words :D. From the reading I've done into the problem I'm leaning towards it being an injector/s. Hopefully I'll get to the bottom of it fast :)

Would anyone happen to know if there is a way to fix a sun visor that has developed a kind of... brewers droop?!

It seems fine on the clip side, just not enough tension on the other to hold it firmly in place anymore and on more occasions than I'd like to admit to I have leant forward and nutted it!

I should have a bigger update when this weather subsides, Bert has a few parts I need to get around to fitting and the FSi should be in for an MOT next week :)

Sounds like you need a replacement. But if it is ok on the small clip on the left side of the driver’s one and if the right hand side is dropping even though it is clipped in the that sounds odd. Replacements are plentiful and cheap.

So...

I got the drivers sun visor fixed thanks to a very nice conditioned one from Boxy a while back, recently passed the MOT requiring a wheel bearing and picking up a few advisories that I'm working my way through.

First up on the list was new discs and pads for the front and finally getting around to fitting the new splash guards I got from Crew Audi to add to ATE discs and ATE ceramic low dust pads.

Old discs and pads looking erm... well loved!

Old splash guard (swear words may have been used while attacking the rather corroded bolts!)

Nice shiny new splash guard :)

New disc. When doing the drivers side the locating Torx bolt was missing!

Finished, test driven and all working fine :)

Next... is the suspension refresh I've been talking about since I joined here!

I wondered if I could trouble you all for a little advise...

I mentioned recently a Red Colour Storm that is 5mins from me for sale, TDi 75, 1 owner, 75k, OSS , Full history etc. Well I just went to view itand it's very tidy, actually has a few other spec items, factory rear PDC, CD changer, passenger airbag isolation, false boot floor. Full service record with loads of other history and receipts, both keys etc. Owned by a local school teacher for all its life.

So the bad bits, the OSS wasn't working, just clicking. I'm not sure if that necessitates a full replacement via A2Steve or if it can be repaired... A cambelt is due and the front pads need replacing. It's up at £3495 which is way too strong given the roof and cambelt. I think i'd be happy around £3k if that's possible (I need to speak with my wife before putting in an offer) and it would mean I'd be selling both my current A2's once I've purchased. What are the thoughts, should I stay away, is it still too rich even at £3k? I realize it might get bought from underneath me posting this but what will be will be :) Just looking for some thoughts either way as I'm probably a little blinkered as it's almost the perfect A2 in my eyes.

Thanks in advance!

OSS can be fixed, but you are better off buying a donor roof to refurb and then swap onto the car, then sell the broken one. This is what I have done twice now, but it isn't that easy to get the panels and mechanism to line up and work properly. The one I refurbed on my sons A2 has worked perfectly since but I had to spend £250 on parts to do it properly.
I would say £3k is a very good price for such a car, especially one owner.

£3K sounds like the sort of money I would want to pay for it with a working OSS and the cam belt /water pump just done.
I would be offering more like £2200 and move upwards to £2500 max
Its a buyers market at the moment especially on the TDI's as its the devil fuel, not that I agree with that
