Best 16" tyre for the SE alloy?

Has anyone any experience of running both 185/50's and the 195/45's and can compared the difference?

Not on the same vehicle back to back but we have a set of 185/50 Aoteli P607s on my other half's 1.4i, and a set of 195/45 Uniroyal Rainsport3s on my project car, all on 16" SE rims. To be honest, I have been surprisingly impressed with the Aotelis in all conditions and handling given they weren't a make I'd heard of (a tyre guy at my fitting place said they were used by a lot of taxis and offered good value for money as well as adequate performance). If anything I'd have difficulty separating these and the 195/45s - similarly light handling feel, decent braking in all conditions (we get a lot of rain here) - about 10 quid difference in price (Camskill specials) each. Reason for similarity I suspect is that they are both 84 rated tyres and relatively lightweight fitted. I have 195/55 Rainsport3s (88 rated) on my everyday A2 and those are a bit chunkier and have quite stiff side walls - just feel like they'll go over anything pretty well; not quite as spritely in the bends but maybe a slightly sharper turnin if you are performing an avoiding manoeuvre (has happened a couple of times with cars nosing out of entrances on my way to work without looking).

Hope this isn't too much of a digression.

Here some Aoteli P607 too.

Bought them brand new and was purchased to just try out.
Although a little louder then other brands they performed well till the worn limit.
One time had a slippery occasion in the wet, but was due to diesel spillage from a lorry......... No tyre could counter that one I guess.
Size was in 195/50-16, and I wanted to purchase them again, unfortunately Aoteli is not making/selling them in mentioned size anymore.
Now got Conti's (thanx to @[email protected]) in 195/50-16.

This thread has been such a lifesaver. Seeing my tyres were all looking a little worse for wear I’d ordered a set of Kumho Ecsta HS51’s on recommendation above from black circles who managed to ‘lose’ them delaying my fitting by a week, in the meantime I get in the car last night and my near side rear was not just low but flat - I’m off on a 400 mile round trip this weekend so my last resort (beyond some pointless budget options) was Conti Eco 6s from the local Kwik Fit (needs must and they were in stock). I was on some 185/55/16 ‘Maxxis Victra Z4S’ so I’ve stuck with 185/55s for the new set. Kwik Fit fitters did manage to break all of the hubcaps so they’re covering a new set of those.

Maybe not the best option but they look and feel like a decent set for now and I’ve learned a lot about the speedo and rolling speeds that I did not know having read through a pile of reviews and the tyres and wheels thread.

Sounds like absolutely the best option to me.

Conti's are great tyres, the 185/55's will give you a bit more comfort and make your speedo more accurate and give slightly lower revs (and so noise) at motorway speeds, oh and a brand new set of centre caps too!

Sounds like a win, win, win to me ?

I'm running 195/45 x 16" Goodyear Efficientgrips. Seem fine, and noticeably quieter than the Michelin Crossclimates that I had before on pepperpot 15" wheels.

I'm delighted to confirm that the Michelin Crossclimate 2 is finally available in the correct size for this wheel. So I've ordered some.

I had some Crossclimates on an A3 and they were excellent. I'll report back in a few days to tell you what I think of the Crossclimate 2...

My commute is mostly A Road and Motorway with Urban and Town at either end. Sometimes I use Country Lanes where winter tyres have saved the day on Frozen Run Off.. ?

Yes but which size?

Personally I have found Falkens to be a very good tyre on the A2 with 16" wheels. Not really wanting to get involved in throwing mud about the place, but if your cambelt had done little mileage but was ancient, wouldn't you be changing it?

That’s good to know. If anyone can help me collect this set of pepperpots from Southsea I would be putting the same on them if they’re available on 175 or 185/60/15!

Agree with Falkens, they make some very good tyres now. I've got a set in 185/55 16 flavour not on a car at the moment though.

Not sure what the rest of it means though....made me think of Manuel in Fawlty Towers.....ke? ?

Probably this one, a bit pricey though ?
because of the price, and this review at

I recently fitted the Vredstein Quatrac in that same size to all four corners.

His conclusion was:
4 Vredestein Quatrac C/B/70
3 Continental AllSeasonContact B/B/72
2 Pirelli Cinturato All Season SF2 B/B/68 *unavailable in size
1 Michelin CrossClimate 2 B/B/69

… and for milder areas where snow is rare
3 Vredestein Quatrac C/B/70
2 Pirelli Cinturato All Season SF2 B/B/68 *unavailable in size
1 Michelin CrossClimate 2 B/B/69

I live at the coast, and snow is rare: enjoying my new tyres
For years had been running Continental PremioumContact, then EcoContact. Also had pepperpots with Michelin Alpin tyres but changing from summer to to winter; then back again was too much of a faff
