Big bill expected from Audi, info needed...

Hi

I posted the saga that is my 1.4Tdi A2 a couple of months ago. I have now been without my car for a month, my local garage giving up and suggesting I go to Audi for their superior diagnostics and the force of Audi behind them. They have done various things and still not sorted the problem and its now going to be hitched up to Audi HQ for a good rummage in the systems as they have decided its electrical.
Keeping it as brief as possible...
My car would not start, it would turn over but not a cough or splutter would it utter. My local garage got a #1 injector fault, replaced and no different. He went over the car until he had exhausted his diagnostic powers, it then went to Audi.

Audi ran a diagnostic, apparently took over 2 hours only to produce a crank sensor fault, they replaced it - still not starting. question - would it really take the diagnostic system a long time to pick up a crank sensor error? (note that the local garage had fitted one that week in the hope this would help so it was brand new and audi eventually tried to say it was overtighted and damaged!)
They then decided to look at the fuel system. Long story short, they said it was the fuel pump, there was only a trickle of fuel output and it should be 'gushing'. I thought it was a mechanical pump but he said it had a diaphragm. I argued the point as best I could on other grounds but in the end had to concede to this - guess what, made no difference, though Audi insisted the fuel is now gushing! Question-surely if the pump had any output it would pressurise the system and on cranking over I would at least have a bit of spluttering even if the car wouldnt run? What is it that could fail on the pump? Why would this only show itself as a starting fault?

I am sincerely hoping that this second diagnostic will prove what is actually wrong with it. My issue with Audi is that I didnt want an engine refurb, their remit was to see why it wasnt starting so I want to be clear of the above facts before I am faced with an extorsionate bill for unecessary/unjustifiable work.

Sorry for the rant, hope it makes sense and if any of you Audi master technicians out there can answer this then that would be great - I am happy to provide any detail! Thanks for any input.

A diagnostic scan should not take that long but they may have checked various other elements at the same time.

Has anyone done a compression test in amongst all these tests?
I am assuming they have eradicated all immobilser issues?
Faulty ECU?

Sorry to hear about your issues, it is very difficult to advise without seeing the car or doing a fault scan. Whenever I take a car to a dealer I always ask them to save any replaced parts and would stress that I would not pay for any items if the issue had been resolved.

Sorry I cant be more help, hopefully someone will perhaps be able to pass on more specific guidance.

Have you searched to see if there are any vagcom users near to you to see if they can flag up any pointers?
