Big Brake Upgrade

Hi Mike

Just spotted this thread. Nice to see a post from you... brought back some good memories!

Will (now 22!) remembers you from the camping trip and asked about you the other day (I passed the red colour storm onto him) and I mentioned that you were involved in my return to the A2 a few years ago.

I hope things are continuing to go well for you!

With best regards as always.

Alan

Steve, you and I have crossed swords in the past. That is in the past however.

As to giving it a go and seeing if I can fit back in - I am afraid that the club is a square hole and I'm far from a square peg. My comments on moderators is based upon the information displayed by each poster's avatar, and I don't believe I've ever said that I've not been welcomed back, so I don't see why you'd make that suggestion.

As to being disagreed with, on matters of fact, there's no way around right or wrong. On matters where opinion comes into it, I understand that everyone is entitled to an opinion, but more and more often, it seems that mine is out of step with the majority. You'll never convince me that the like button is beneficial, you'll never convince me that Facebook is either. I can choose not to use one, the other is enforced on me if I want to use what was my club.

Members benefitting from my knowledge? Members (and users alike) can do so by using the search function - there's pretty much nothing that's not been covered over the last 17 years that isn't on the site somewhere. There's no need for me to spoonfeed info to those who can't be bothered to search.

Hi Mike,

As a long standing member, friend and one who has always looked up to you, respecting your knowledge and professional prowess, I am pleased to see you back on these pages. The search engine is available you are right, but it isn’t always the greatest at returning results or the most intuitive to use. Your input and vast knowledge has come to the rescue of many over the years, myself included, and I’m sure that many, if not all, members would welcome active contribution from you once again.

I hope that you may give serious consideration to returning and putting the past behind you.

I hope too the legend that is Tank still continues to give you pleasure.

Warmest regards,

Darren, Di, Kayleigh & Kieran

Darren, you are literally too kind.

However, you have made the classic error that a lot of people make - there's nothing wrong with the search engine, it's just the search term that is often at fault. That, combined with modern human nature of wanting things instantly (i.e. not wanting to read through several threads first) means that users just lose patience and want help from others. Rather than be snappy with them, especially the lazy ones who are forever asking questions that are so easily found, I'd prefer to let others step in.

Now if it were something new, that's a different matter and one that I'll raise in a thread in the near future about water and where it was disappearing!

Hi Mike. Good to see you visiting the forum again. Just like to say I'm still enjoying the longer 5th gear that you fitted back in 2010. And your tank is a legend :)

All the best.

Thanks Alan. Glad you're enjoying the longer gear - I was too until around 3 months ago, when it jumped out under load on the motorway. Fixed now - will update that thread in due course.

Cheers,

M.

Hi Mike

I'd like to echo the sentiments of many others on the forum and welcome you back; no matter how much participate! Seeing your name and profile pic takes me back 8-9 years ago, when A2OC was the first site I opened up on my browser each morning. Reading the comments, and occasionally throwing in my own tuppence worth, was like conversing with old pals.

I'd also like to tell you how the service you performed on Liv was the best it has ever received! I've been to a couple of other garages since, both highly recommended - one has caused me no end of problems with ever-increasing bills - but your sterling work meant Liv purred like a cat and took my family around the European mainland on two separate jaunts without any issues! Is this a service you may provide again?

Anyhoo, once again Mike, good to have you back.

Jag

You're very kind Jag and not the first to enquire/urge that I take up the spanners again. These days, my television work takes up lots and lots of my time and I suspect that I'll have even less time in the near future.

However, there is the possibility that I may be tempted to take up arms again, for (dare I say) friends such as yourself and Posh Dave, who has also exhorted me to get fettling again. We'll see what the future brings - one thing is for sure, November and December are not the best months to be out servicing our little motors!!

Thanks once again and all the best to you and yours Jag.

Absolutely agree, although I didn't measure the wall thickness of that piston.

The worrying part is that the pedal will contine to go down if pressed hard. If there was just air in the system, it'd compress and the pedal would 'bounce', but this really does feel like a leak.

On;y time will tell really - fingers crossed for a few dry days until I get a chance to check it out at the weekend.

I wasn't in any way doubting your engineering skills by the way - if anything, the titanium pistons are the strongest link in the chain!

Cheers,

Mike
Mike, I am a newbie on the forum, and was carefully reading your tale describing your brake mod which ended abruptly and has left me hanging, and still wondering what was the cause of your spongy brake pedal??
Now that you surfaced again, pls share the final chapter of your brake mod with us.
Was it a damaged seals in the master cylinder? The lack of loss of brake fluid showing somewhere indicates it is likely to be a fault in a "closed" part of the braking system...
Thx in advance.

No idea what it was in the end. No leaks, no loss in performance, so I've just left it for the last (almost) decade. It's either a designed function of the servo or seals to prevent fluid pressure build up, or is a leak in the seals. Either way, as braking is fine, I've not fixed what's not broken.

Thanks Mike

Having looked over Tank while WOM autos was servicing my A7 , I will be following your footsteps for Basil , it’s appears the 312mm disc set up offers the best of both worlds , simple and not massively weighty , but a huge improvement in stopping power from the A2 set up , with off the shelf - or breakers yards parts from the MK1 TT readily available.

So brought the hubs , discs , brake lines , and the calliper rebuilding kit and their in the shed waiting for warmer days .....

Job for the summer !

Hi!

What’s that latest thinking and choices for a brake system upgrade for a 1.6 FSI?

Suspension wise, I will be running Bilstein B6s and the Eibach prokit springs, plus sway bars and poly bushes all round. I will be increasing power via a Stealth Racing rolling road remap. Already have a catback stainless exhaust by Powerflow installed that should have added +/- 8hp I believe. Currently have 75,000 miles on the clock.

I was considering going with the ATE Powerdisc + ATE (non-ceramic) normal pads (because ceramic pads + Powerdisc apparently induces steering vibration according to ATE), with ATE replacement callipers.

Keen to hear thoughts and advice! Need to decide and buy over the coming few days.

Thanks in advance.

Apologies if the answer is already somewhere in this Thread already but I have not read the whole thing. Just stumbled upon it. Always think I would like better Brakes on the A2 after I have driven our 2017 A6 Avant

Was the Size of the Master Cylinder modified to match the Size of the modified Calipers ?

Is there not a formula that says what Size of Master Cylinder is needed in relation to the Size of the Pistons in the Calipers ?
