Bike Rack and Tow Bar

Hello,

I am new to the world of A2 and was wondering if any one would be able to help? Sorry to bring up this old chestnut but I have not been able to find out the definative answer.

I am off on Holiday soon and was hoping to take my bike (3 of them to be correct) but I need a bike rack. But do they do one for the A2? or is it a tow bar job? and if so do they do an all ali one?

Regards,

Heidi, the pic with the bike on the roof is mine, the roof bars and the genuine audi bike rack is excellent. Stafford audi had an offer of £85 each for these, which was a good price, but I bought 2 brand new from an A3 owner for £80!, almost as good and as if luck would have it, 3 racks are for sale now on ebay £45 each no postage!!

That is a very good price!

They slot into the A2 roof bars which pop up on ebay occasionally

Roof Rack

Does any one know what it is like to drive with bikes on the roof?

Does it have much effect on the MPG? How much does it limit your spreed?

Heidi,
Well with a roof box on it's not too bad but with the bikes on as well gets a bit LOUD over 65ish, main thing to remember of course is that your taller than normal car just got a whole lot higher, careful of those drive thru's and carpark height barriers!
On the fuel side doesn't really make a huge difference if you keep your speed to 60 - 65, above that you'll lose about 10mpg per 10mph speed gain

Been there done that i tried to drive underneath my car port once with
the bikes on the roof of my old cavalier as i had driven for hours and was tired
i forgot they where on the roof , it was/nt pretty it recked the bike racks
but the bikes where ok Dohhh !!!!

It did effect the petrol consumption slightly and you will most definatly notice the noise with them on the roof but it will be worth it when you get to where your going ....

Dear Wooly A2,

Having a husband who is always driving in to things with his ladders on the roof of his van I was hopeing to avoid the roof as I would guess that would be a costly mistake both in money and me nagging him.

And think of my poor baby I could not let him damage it an any way it is bad enough I have to let him in it from time to time!

I've got a towbar fitted and use the thule towball mounted 3 bike carrier. It's fantastic - and doesn't seem to affect the mpg too much as the bikes are behind the car!

Dear Gexx,

Did you have to cut the bumper to have the tow bar fitted?

Regards,

Heidi987321

Yeah The black plastic has to be cut - but it is not really noticable as the audi towbar is the removable swan neck sort, so the cut is at the base of the black plastic.

Dear All,

Thank you for all your help.

The tow bar was fitted yesterday and my baby was returned today.

It looks great, you can hardly see where it goes!

The bike rack fits on so easy.

The only thing left to do is go for a bike ride!!

Thanks again

It cost me £300 but I did not have to pay labour as I have done a lot of work for the garage (driving there fast cars to shows for them).

However they did say it was a pig to fit but the design has to be the best they have ever seen (like the A2, well designed)
