Biodiesel

Hi i know there has been a bit of a discusion about this but for the first time i tried some biodiesel yestarday from a company in sheffield, Bio uk fuels Ltd all seemed great stopped off in meadowhall shopping centre and then a few hrs later atempted to drive home, what i can say was the longest drive home. It started ok, drove out of the car park, got round on to the slip to join the M1 and it missed a little bit then nothing, got onto the M18 and it was down hill from then on. The car started to cough an splutter and speed went down to 40 with foot flat to the floor, got it to the service's end of the M180 and rang for the AA he came and after 1.5 hrs and would only drop us in a 10 mile radius asked to upgrade so he could take us home the answer was NO , he could drop me at a garage that could do a drain but a 10pm didn't know if it would be done that night and it would be about £200 , so i drove home stopping as the speed dropped to about 40mph, i would wait for about 10 mins and i would get about 5 or 6 miles and have to stop again got home about half 11 what a night.
Got up this morning started the car first go went for a drive no probs and as the temp came up it started all over again
Because i was only doing at best 50 to 60 not used much fuel so draining the tank to night putting fresh diesel in and going to slowly add the mix over the coming months

I used 50/50 mix the temp was good yestarday but it runs better when the car is cold as the car gets up to temp thats when the trouble starts don't think i will be using that again HA !!! enuogh of my rantting (had to get that off my chest):D

After a dodgy tank of biodiesel (Stockport Audi referred to it as used Mazola!), I've been using V-power diesel and I'm now getting 50+mpg easily round town - not bad for something as tuned as Tank.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune Grim, I had the same experience, although Audi Assist (RAC) were very helpful.

Cheers,

Mike

oops, sounds like a no no, i think the original post on this subject got us confused with biodiesel and veggie oil (svo)
for me the veggie has been extremely successfull when mixed with pump fuel:D

thinned this down now took about 15lts out and put 25lts of fresh in still got a bit of a flat spot when it gets up to temp (over 2k rpm's) when the tank gets down to three quarters will put some V-power in that should sort the flat spot out

Cheers Phil

Hi Phil
If the next dose of diesel does not cure it then its worth trying an new fuel filter since its quite common for the element to sludge up after mixing fuels.

Cheers Spike

Been for a short run in it tonight got up to temp and fingers crossed no probs looks like it clearing its self , was sill thinking of putting a filter on anyway

Cheers Phil

Don't use more than 5% BIO Blended fuel unless you convert to Elsbett

UK Bio fuels retailers often DO NOT meet German RME standards for bio fuel so unless you drive an old non turbo / pre PD (VAG) / pre HDi (P,R,C) car like a 1980s Merc stay clear of high percentage blends!

If you want to run B100 (100% bio diesel) then you must convert your car to suit - recommend Elsbett who invented PD for VAG in the 1970s (but they took until 1998 to bring it to market).

The kit includes larger injectors, filtration and can be set up for single or two tank systems (ie: 1 tank for normal diesel the other for 100% bio).

Cost around £1000 fitted.

With dino diesel seen at 1.239 per litre near Oxford last week (£5.64 per gallon!) I might even go this route with the 1.2 TDI!

Thats the thing i was only going to use it on the odd time as there are no filling stations (bio fuel) around me so when i go out of town normaly use the tescos at s****horpe as its normaly 2 or 3p a litre cheeper not sure how that works as we are closer to refinerys and beans are not cheeper out there but thats another thread i think, so was only going to use that stuff instead but after all the problems don't think so

Cheers Phil
