bl**dy windows! (not the bill gates version)

Hi all

Car now out of warranty, has yet again plagued me with the "you wind the window up, I think I'll wind it down a bit" type thing that seem to of affected a few other members.

Yesterday the ball & chain was spending all the loot, and the car finally said, "I'm not winding the window up anymore" and it wasn't kidding, after 15 mins of panic B&C managed to coerce the window back to the closed position, (phew) but she said it went up, almost zig-zag'ing, but it didn't really want to move unless she helped it.

Does anyone know what this could be?
I don't want to take it back to the dealer, as they never fixed the problem from day 1. and now my warranty is out. It has been in the garage around 6 times over the 3 years to have it sorted, as it keeps reappearing.

Someone mentioned "regulator", someone else "convenience"...

I'd settle for a window that goes up and down when I tell it!

Cheers ears

I had a problem with my drivers window. when I operated the switch to wind it down it would stop when moving the steering wheel weird or what. It turned out to be the thermal switch on the motor which was replaced under warranty phew. I took out a warranty when mine exspired as i cant trust the car not to go wrong again

I have had the same problem and I think it is a thermal switch issue with the motor cutting out. I regularly play the 'up down' game. However on some occasions it wont go up at all - only down and usually right into the door. What seems to over-ride the cutout (thermal?) switch is operating the the central locking switch i.e lock then unlock the doors by the switch and then the window works again! I have tried WD40 along the rubber inserts to smooth the movement but cant really gauge the success. The next option is to replace this thermal switch (if that is the problem) and lube all the moving parts inside the door.

I've had a problem with my window refusing to close until about 5 attempts, due to the safety "finger trap" mechanism kicking in.

Just popped out and bought a can of WD40 Silicone Spray - safe to use on plastic; rubber etc. and leaves no residue (does exactly what it says on the tin!).

Sprayed some on a folder bit of cloth and carefully run the cloth where the glass travels between the rubber window strips.

Job done - it works a treat!

However, the one touch closing only works one way on both front windows in opposing directions?!???? Vorsprung durch tecknik indeed!

Hi,

As eeeboy stated, it happens due to the 'finger trap' system being activated.

After extensive investigation on my old A2, and discussion with the tech guy at my AUDI dealer, I concluded that its due to a poor design (tolerances?) of the window fitting.

If you watch the window when it starts to move, you will see it 'rock' slightly - once the window gets close to the top, this rock is interpretated as a blockage, and therefore the motor reverses.
You can confirm this by actually placing the palm of your hand on the glass and by applying pressure stop the glass from rocking as you operate the switch to close the window - in this condition, it will close.

Adding WD40 is probably a good option - possible stops the window from rocking - maybe?
