Black Bits

Hi Guys.

What is the best thing to clean the black bits at the bottom of the car with? I am going to have a go at detailing when I get back from a business trip next month. I think everything should come up really well apart from the black sill covers near the front of the rear wheel. They look lke they have been sandblasted. Will clay work on these bits or is there some kind of plastic polish I could use? No matter how clean I get them, they look pitted and grey, rather than smooth and black. They are not too bad at the front and in the middle but at the rear they are not very good. It is also quite bad at the front/bottom of the rear wheel arch too. Any ideas?

I am going to get some mudflaps eventually, so maybe that will help.

Thanks for any info/tips.

Hi Lee,

I have the same sandblasted effect! I fitted Audi mudflaps and this seems to have stopped the problem getting worse. To cover up the pitting I use Autoglym Bumpercare. Wipe it on, quite a lot, so it looks wet. Leave it for about 20 mins (or until it has dried a bit) and then buff it with a clean microfibre cloth. This seems to give good results. I also do this to the front and rear bumper, the side sill and rubbing strips. The more you apply the shinier it gets.

Cheers,

David

That's not good though is it? They are all meant to be satin finish. This is why I asked. I don't want them all shiny. That doesn't look right. I will deffo go for some mudflaps though. That should stop them getting any worse at least.

Cheers,

Hi Lee,

I quite like having a bit a shine to the black trim, not bling shiny, just a bit of sheen. On mine the shine also seems to cover up any imperfections and helps with the sandblasted effect. If over time you build up the amount of this product on the sills then will then bead like the waxed paintwork, which makes washing off road salt etc a lot easier.

I would take some pics to show the finish acheived, but black plastic doesn't show up very well!!

Cheers,

David
