bonnet paint flaking

disaster has struck...a large patch of paint work has decided to flake off the bonnet of my a2..just wondered if anyone knew if this could be down to a flaw with the A2 paint or if i should be more concerned about the engine overheating or something of this nature....either way i'm pretty unhappy that the aesthetics of my car are ruined:( cheers

Worth posting a photo so we could say if its due to poor paint work (probebly done cheap) or from another reason. i would say cheap job, not keying the panel up properly will leave areas prone to this

thanks for the reply phil...

i'll post a picture up tomorrow...the history of the car is a little hazy so this may well be the case...

cheers Kevin

i think you'll agree its a right old mess...any thoughts on cost of respraying / lacquering etc?

As Bretti put just lacquer, as i put in my post classic panel not keyed up enough before painting. I would say you'll be looking around the £120>£150 mark

This reminds me of the time my gradfather got a new silver fox mk2 cortina-first metalic paint. He was told do not polish it-he always did weekly--ford recalled silver fox cars due to laquer falling off. Grand dads never did !
Not really helping am i but thought i would share. cheers mike

I've took the degenerate laquer off the bonnet with a power washer as it now looks better than it did. [Even in 'matt']. Thinking of going down the black 'carbon fibre' wrap option for the bonnet and maybe the wing mirrors and roof too as this has started to go on the bit just above the windscreen. The amulet red coloured A2's lend themselves to the 'blacked-over' effect I feel. Interestingly, the vent on the bonnet has remained totally unaffected by the demise of it's surroundings.....

was just talking to a guy on the phone there as we are selling our A2. He was saying how his Amulate red A4 had laquer peal and spent a fortune on getting the whole car repainted, then it turns out there is a known fault with Audi that the laquer on the Amulate red did not take to the paint and the laquer will lift over time. From what he was saying you should take it back into audi and push them about it and see if they will crack at getting it repainted under a manufacturing defect as its a known issue and why the colour only ran for 2 years as they had to drop the colour

I've worked in a bodyshop for over 14 years now 1st with ford then on to Audi Refurb work (EX rental cars) so the cars are only 6 months old. and over them years car companys change colours every 2 years or so anyway, so thats not why they dropped the colour, as the paint flaking would have happened well after they changed the colour. they even remix there STD colours like silver and blacks, they will have a shade difference or different metallic in them but still be black or silver and you wouldn't tell them apart unless the door or something got painted in the wrong shade.

But whats strange for me is why only that colour as it would have had to be a batch as not every Amulate car was painted at the same time so why not the cars before or after it. As paint is paint, now if they had a problem with the laquer or bake process all the cars done in that batch would be affected. the only thing i can think of is the fact that when ever we painted reds at work they never covered like other colours so they had to use more coats which in turn means more paint now if that paint had been dried properly then this can effect the paint but its more of a reaction as it drys and not anything like this. But also why not silver as this is very much the same you have to put more silver on as this doesn't cover. It still looks to me like its been painted after and that that has been a dodgy paint job

I know it's an old thread, but my Amulet Red bonnet has done exactly the same thing; the clear lacquer top coat started to come away in one small area as the result of a stone chip, and now there are dozens of patches where it's bubbled and started to peel. Moisture must get under the lacquer, causing it to lift I guess. The red paint coating itself is still perfectly intact underneath.

I thought I was being clever when I spotted an amulet red bonnet for sale on eBay and snapped it up. It arrived, but to my dissapointment had the early signs of the same thing happenning so now I have 2 bonnets with the same issue! Expect to see a patchy amulet red bonnet for sale on the forum some time soon!

As the car is now 10 years old I assume it's far too late to go back to Audi? Has anyone had any success with doing so?

Amulet red is apparently not the only one affected; my sprint blue colour storm has the same thing on the front bumper -- pretty sure due to a stone chip also. My A2 seems to be falling apart at the moment :(

Hi Phil,

Yes, but I thought I was being clever by buying the 'new' bonnet in the right colour. Never mind eh; it's only money!

Exactly the same colour LY3C. Does anyone found a solution on 2022 :) ?
