Boot Struts

Fitted these today. The new struts are much more eager and are actually too keen as the tailgate reaches the fully open position, giving a somewhat snap toward the last 20% of movement. I’ll be holding on to the tailgate as a safeguard.

Early days, but for circa £38, hope they represent good value; noting the comment from @Imola Yellow.

Giving these a go, ordered today after banging my head multiple times on slow raising struts.

I'll feedback my initial thoughts once fitted.

Hi all,
I've noticed recently that my boot is getting a bit heavy and the struts don't seem to hold it all the way up any more. So, rather than getting another used pair, I am thinking I will invest in some new ones that may last longer. Does anyone have any recommendations? I've seen some that are a couple of millimetres too long and cause the tailgate to hit on the roof, and obviously, I do not want this from a new strut.
Thanks,

Adam
Hi Adam,
I’ve gone down the stabilus route due to the damped effect at fully open, but I notice the rubber boot fitted on the end of the cylinder can slow the piston down , I first noticed this when the car had been washed.
Another area I’ve thought may need attention is the proper lubrication of the hinge mechanism given that the car is in my case
17 years old, I’ve not seen mention of this
on the forum.

Keith.

I've been using these for a month. I can only say that better than the old ones. The cheapest option at a local store - cost 16 eur for both.

So, my new SGS struts are very short-lived. I'd go as far to say that the SGS struts are shocking (pun intended, though not in a good way).

After being under pressure, i.e. boot lowered for a period of time, they groan on first operation and raise slowly, needing a helping hand for the latter part of travel. After this initial issue on opening, they 'worked' smooth and fine thereafter. (I noticed no issue on fitting them as the boot hadn't been under lowered pressure for any period of time). I say 'worked', past tense, as today one of them kept popping off the body of the A2. They are fitted correctly, locked in and the correct way up, so this is not an install error. The struts are also the correct length.

I emailed customer services today looking for replacements. No response. I will no longer be looking for replacement parts after they failed to hold in place and might well foot the Audi bill and buy original. I'm not confident it will be a smooth road to get my money back on these, but I will try.

I should add that I googled the creaking issue this morning and low and behold another SGS customer had the same issue in 2015. https://www.benzworld.org/forums/v-class/2304770-new-gas-struts-creaking-what-about.html

My counsel is avoid, whether confined to a dodgy batch or two or otherwise. I hope this helps others to make informed decisions.

Not surprised.
In a moment of madness probably 5 years ago now I bought 4 stands and the standard 2 tonne jack from SGS. The jack leaked fluid on its first outing just lifting up a VW polo. The stands rusted like they had been in the sea. I weighed the lot in recently.
Do they still advertise it as quality British product?

To be fair, the website jargon inspires confidence.

Based in Derby, SGS Engineering (UK) Ltd has over 30 years of experience manufacturing and supplying high quality tools and equipment. As well as distributing for select brands such as SPX Power Team we are the largest manufacturer of gas struts in the UK and carry a huge range of our own garage equipment such as air compressors, tool chests, trolley jacks, hydraulic shop presses and engine cranes. With a focus on quality at the right price our products are used by the general public and industry alike, both domestically and abroad.

Not surprised.

@CreweAudi , how much would a pair of genuine Audi struts cost please? At the moment the request is just for comparison, but if the price is not too much more there could be a pay a bit extra and avoid hassle benefit.

I too am in need of new struts. From Audi.7zap.com there would seem to be two different part numbers
8Z0827552A upto VIN 8Z-1-055000
8Z0827552C from VIN 8Z-1-055001

Presumably suffix B superceded A at some point?

SGS have 3 different struts for the A2
GSC1066 for suffix A and Suffix B
GSC2965 for Suffix C
GSC2932 for Suffix C & 1087PL

Stabilus have one part number 024335

Unfortunately the part number on mine has long since been worn away but I have assumed suffix C as it's VIN starts 8Z-3 but which one to order?

Also I wonder who actually make them for VAG.
I'll contact SGS as see what they have to say and report back.

Regards
Jonathan

On the second time of asking, I got this reply

'The GSC2932 gas struts are marginally shorter than the GSC2965 struts, but as long as the part number matches then both gas struts would technically be suitable. The GSC2932 struts also have an alternative part number that may be printed on select gas struts installed on this model.'

I am none the wiser. My apologies for adding nothing more useful.

Possibly this won't help you but I remortgaged the house a few weeks ago, well almost had to, and purchased a genuine Audi set. I did get a slight discount after negotiations.

54 plate FSI and part number was: A8Z0 827 552 C

If going the Audi route they usually ask for your registration number and then identify the parts from there - the VIN being on the system I presume.

Cheers,

Darren

After reading your post I ordered a set of these, I managed to get them fitted today and on first impression's they seem to work really well considering they only cost just under £17.50 for the pair, so even if they last half the time of genuine Audi struts they're still a good buy.

The first pair fitted have been in use for 12 months and get used regularly when we take our dog. Still as good as new!
