Hi, I have just driven my A2 down to Crete, We had removed the rear seats to make space for an out board, dinghy and other equipment, I wouldn't say it was up to the roof but well up the rear windows with kit, my biggest concern was having to change a wheel! This is the same car we took to Turkey a couple of years ago.
The route was Aberdeen- Dover- France- Switzerland- Italy, Ancona ferry, Patras,Athens ferry to Heraklion Crete, mileage 1990 miles door to door. On the Swiss border, in to Italy, we were pulled over by border police.
First of all the hatch was opened and a couple of boxes searched, officers then moved to the passengers and drivers seats, removed the mats / carpets and exposed the hatches in to the floor area. I have had a few A2s but this is the first time I had seen these compartments. The hatches were removed and with the aid of lights and mirrors the area searched, luckily it was clean, and empty.
I just wanted to bring this to owners attention, if you have not been in these compartments, it is probably worth opening them if heading for Europe, its obviously a well known hiding place , to others!

We got stopped on the Austrian Swiss border last year and searched. However they were not the thorough

Next trip will be bringing the car back later in the year, probably return overland, from Crete, ferry to Athens, Patras and up through Albania, Bosnia , Croatia etc, but thats not till September ish. The car has done over 170,000 miles now and been totally reliable, ideal for this kind of trip.

Nice journey!
How it took them to take it apart and put back together?

The whole journey took four days but that included 2 over night ferries. Diesel, No cruise control, I wish, but with two of us sharing the driving at two hour stints not to bad. the longest part was Calai to Ancona just over 1k miles none stop apart from fuelling.

The border police were pretty quick at exposing the panels, pulling the carpets from under the transmission tunnel and removing the them, took us twice as long to replace , we were held up for an hour. On the plus side, they were really good humoured, we got the impression they had been waiting for an A2for a while!!
