Brake light switch issues

Evening all

Am hoping you can help us with a query

Our EPC light came on intermittently a few weeks ago. From reading on the forum and later scanning the car we concluded the issue was a brake light switch as when the lights was on we had no brake lights and the Cruise Control stopped working. It seemed that when the light came on it stayed on until we parked up and left the car for a while.

My husband replaced the switch. We sourced it from Audi but to fit it he found he had to lightly file down the lugs on it as otherwise it would not turn inside the hole and lock in. We cleared the fault and it appeared to be fixed.

However on Friday the light came on again whilst driving, by the time I reached my destination it had gone off again and as I was driving in town was unable to check whether I had any brake lights or if the cruise was working. Today whilst driving on the motorway the cruise kept cutting out on us but the EPC light was not on, the light then came on later and went off by the time we parked.

Having scanned the car the same fault code - 16955 - has come up again and we are unsure what to do next. We have thought the following
1) Not sure why the replacement switch had to be filed a little - is this usual? We don't mind having to buy another one as it was only around £10 but if its the same as the original it won't go into the hole - any suggestions?
2) Is it possible that the connector itself has somehow got damaged or worn? The original switch was removed a couple of times as we visited a couple of local parts places and took it out each time to try and source a switch before resorting to our Audi dealer, and obviously hubby tried to fit the new one before filing it. It does seems to be slightly wobbly now and wonder if thats causing the intermittent fault?

All suggestions appreciated!

Thanks Spike, will get another brake light switch and try following the last couple of suggestions, thanks!

Lisa,

You can check brake switch function with vag-com. Measuring block 4, second field, last digit 1 if brake pedal pressed, 0 if not.

metal plate may need bending

I found that when fitting my new switch there was a little metal plate that i had to bend so it worked correctly as it seemed to have moved away so when the pedal was pressed it only just met the switch plunger?? it could be this and worth checking.

Thanks, hubby is collecting the brake switch from Audi today so will hopefully get chance to fit it, let you know how we get on!
