After sone 1000 miles the new EBC Green Stuff brakes are squealing, now unbearably! Im not sure what to do, does anybody have any ideas?

Would I speak to EBC or to GSF where I got them from. I think the running in period is well and truly over and its just getting worse!

I used the search function as I thought somebody here had the same prblem a while back, but to no avail?

anybody?

Brakes Squealing

I dont know if this helps but I remembered reading the following from the EBC website recently, found it and cut and pasted it below, it mentions you might need fibre shims added? I dont know if you did originally.

"NOISE - Light whistling/squeaking (at walking pace)
This noise usually happens as the vehicle is coming to rest and is again typical of a pad that is just bedding in or has been under used. Again the remedy is to allow a few hundred miles for the pads to properly seat and have 100% contact surface against the disc. If the problem occurs intermittently, one good cure is to use the brake severely every day now and again on a safe secluded low traffic piece of road to “de-glaze” the surface of the brake pad. Obviously extreme caution must be used when recommending this to customers, especially with regard to the low traffic aspect. If the problem occurs continuously and the pad was not fitted with shims on the rear of the steel backing plate, call EBC for a free set of anti-squeal shims, which can be fitted by your local dealer. As this type of incident is usually vehicle specific EBC do not normally undertake to absorb the fitting charges for applying the shims but will issue the shims themselves free of charge.

SCREECHING (a loud squealing noise when applying the brakes at all times)
The usual reason for this is that the pads have not bedded in. If this has happened during the early life of fitment tell the customer to wait 300 - 500 miles until the pads are fully bedded in. This noise is also very prevalent when the pads have been fitted to rotors that have not been turned and have grooves or scoring. This will also extend the bed in time.

This is caused sometimes by the pad bouncing around in the caliper and can be cured by the application of fibre shims. Call EBC for the issue of free shims, the installation of which must be paid for by your installing mechanic, which should solve the problem."

Well.... "Sport" pads are ALWAYS noisier than normal ones...
Probably the best thing to do is try a new brand/model.
Have you ever tried Ferodo's DS2500 ?
I have them on the Elise, used to have them on my previous car (S2000); excellent braking power, acceptable noise.

I can remember real problems with my Alpine some long time ago when fitted with EBC pads, no idea what the cure was, neither did anyone else, but blind prejudice steers me away from them now, as they nearly killed me. OK, I'm stupid and irrational, but that's how it is.

I have driven them 1000+ miles now, coupled with brand new discs too.
There is no let up in the squeal, all the pads have shims aswell.

Should I get back onto GSF or EBC?

Brake Squeal

Hi,

I am a new member - without an A2 - but thinking of buying one later this year.

For my sins, I run a company called Competition Braking Products which sells Pagid RS brake pads for competition and trackday use.

In my opinion, with the power output of an A2, you are probably better sticking to a good quality Original Eqipment standard pad - you are not really going to generate the heat to get the likes of DS2500 / Pagid working at their optimum temperature.

EBC Green Stuff is sold as a performance upgrade - but in reality it is right at the low end of performnce market and pretty close to OE.

Pad squeal can normally be eliminated / reduced by the fitting of a shim to the backplate. If your EBC pads already have shims - are they metal shims or are they a 'rubberised' material?

I can send you 4 pieces of the rubberised material which is self adhesive. If the shims on your pads are metal this may improve the situation as the softer material absorbs the sound. If interested - send me a PM with your address and I'll post you some (foc of course!).

Failing that we also supply TEXTAR OE quality pads - might be a better option once you have got your money's worth out of the EBC set!
