Broken repeaters

I just fitted mine a couple of weeks back - for sure you need to press the blue circled bit in to give the room to push the other side in but not to the point that its going to break off. Its meant to be a tight fit.

So did the unit snap into place by pressing it straight in rather than sliding it in?

Try rotating them 180 then fit.

Are you quite sure, I.e. the blue circled tab at the back rather than the front? I did have a try at that but they didn’t seem any more likely to go in, and it would seem to contradict the workshop manual.

No not 100% sure but vaguely remember doing some thing similar on an A4 but in that case the electrical connector was the problem. Normally you fit the step to the rear and slide it under then push the front of the indicator in until it snaps into the wing. Looks like the step in the rear is not fitting behind the wing.

Fit the spring leg facing forward first into the wing then slide the indicator forward and finally push the step into the wing. To remove slide indicator forward, release the rear step, wiggle the indicator back a little and press the spring leg to remove from the wing. Just done it on my car.

I’ll have another look in daylight tomorrow. Perhaps if I compress the clip it might go in. Thanks for the suggestions guys

Just checking we’re not at cross purposes, by the “step” do you mean the notch I was thinking of cutting off marked by the red line in my last photo?

Yes in the photograph you have marked with red, yellow and blue. That part locks in behind the wing, so if you cut it off there is nothing to retain the repeater into the wing and it will continually come out of the wing.

So fit that part lastly. The "springy plastic" part in first then slide the indicator so that it compresses the spring. The "step" should then be able to fit behind the wing. When you release it the spring is held behind the wing also.

Success :). Yes, really squeezing that clip was the key, and in fact one of them went in so easily I don’t know why I had such a problem before. The other one is still a bit awkward and though it’s secure now it’s not sitting perfectly flush... but it’ll do, and to be honest I’m struggling to get it out again so I’d better not have a blown bulb now. Thanks again everyone!

Looks like you've solved the issue, but looking at the photos I'm fairly certain that the (rusty) spring clip is not needed and could have been removed. I suspect the previous owner has fitted this to stop them falling out after the retainer broke.

I agree with this then it’ll fit. Look back at your original picture which shows the broken part which is on the opposite side of your picture.

Rotate 180 degrees and it’ll fit properly.

Being the perfectionist I am, I’d clean the area thoroughly before fitting. Much easier than cleaning after.

You think that rusty bit is not OEM then? Doesn't look very Audi.

I think Catnip64 is correct, 7zap is showing no such (rusty) clip, also if there was meant to be one Audi would have surely used stainless and if you think about it design wise it is redundant.

Ah... this might explain why they were such a tight fit! And you’re right that it’s hard to see what purpose they were serving. I think I’ll leave it for now since, as I said, they’re damned hard to get off now. If a blown bulb forces my hand then I’ll remove the metal bits.

Yep looking at the rusty plates I suspect someone has fitted some type of after market or at least non A2 repeaters that needed them to locate, now are just in the way of genuine repeaters fitting correctly.

I absolutely recommend these ones:

Have been using them for a year. Very bright amber light, being LED they draw less power - what not to like???

Hi Canbus. Thank you for the recommendation about these side repeaters. I bought a pair of black ones to match the car, and they are really good, I like the LED repeat effect. To connect properly, I needed to slice a bit of the plastic fitting off, but that wasn't a problem.
