Ok Great timing It Had to happen right now ,there was a strange squeaking noise coming from the steering but car is now on axle stands and on investigation it turns out to be a broken spring .......

Does anyone no how much it cost's to replace a front spring as mine has just snapped off at the top , 100mm has just dropped of .....
Can i still use the car as the suspension still seams to work ok but it makes a squeaking noise .............

The spring as in this picture

Do the springs have to be changed as a pair , also can you change for different springs or do they have to be changed for the original Audi ones ....

Never had to change a spring in my life so have no idea how much they cost to be replaced ........

IM Desperate as i need to get this sorted out before Castle Combe LOL !!!!!

My friend just had a Golf Mk iv spring changed for £62 all inc at an independent using a genuine part, they only changed one and it handles fine. Amusingly he broke it when he followed someone out of a car park and drove over a rising ramp as it came up.

Broken Spring

Hello Wooly A2,

I too had just the one replaced (nearside). Done by the official Audi dealer, I think the cost was nearer £200, but I can't remember exactly and the receipt isn't near to hand. Given the mileage of your car, you might consider having the anti-roll bar bushes looked at, while it's in the air. I wish I had, as there's a lot of rattling going on with mine just now...

John.

Hi John
Your front suspension rattle could be the anti-rollbar droplinks. They are fairly easy to change yourself and cost around £20 each. I've changed these on my 2001 TDi but the rollbar bushes are still ok.

Cheers Spike

Hi Wooly
In my opinion you don't need to change both springs if you stick with a genuine Audi replacement.
There are several different part nos so check the paint markings on the old spring to ensure a correct match
All the aftermarket spring sets i've seen are 20mm - 30mm shorter and would obviously need all 4 replacing (there is a set of Eibach springs on e.bay at the moment but can't remember which model they suit - just checked, unfortunately they are for a 1.4 petrol)

Cheers Spike

Hi wooly
it's Robin maddy's better half.
you can change just one spring but better to change as a pair as they get softer with use and age.have you got a lot of speed bumps you go over like we have.

I've been considering changing Tanks springs, but only for a more compliant ride.

So far, I've struggled to find any manufacturer which produces anything other than a lower, firmer spring set for the A2.

My sport setup is already firm enough - what I need is better low speed comfort, so progressive wound springs may do the job here, but the increased firmness could negate any benefits derived from the progressive winding.

Why not take the plunge anyway Carl - £89 + postage is far cheaper than Audis prices and Spax is a well-known name. Even if you add on £100 for fitting from an Independant, you'll only just be reaching the Audi price for the parts I would imagine.

Cheers,

Mike

You are kidding right Swindon is all roundabouts and Speed humps the type you have to try and drive around in an A2 cos the car is so narrow you cant drive over them LOL !!!!!

Broken springs

I have today replaced the offside spring for the second time in55,000 miles; the nearside is on its second spring. I have sports suspension and drive on country lanes, inevitably occasionally hitting a pot hole, but should the springs break so frequently? The dealer can not explain why they go so often.
