Cambelt Replacement

Hi Guys,

I've recently purchased my A2 (1 week ago). Dolphin Grey 1.6 Fsi with 37k miles.

I have the same dilemma trying to find a reliable Audi specialist garage in Ipswich. I've been advised by the Audi Dealer (took it for a health check) to have the cambelt replaced as it's 7 years old, however I'm uncertain whether the water pump should be done at the same time. Should I do this job at the Dealer, they've quoted £369- for the cambelt replacement alone? Do the Tensioners and Rollers need to be replaced at the same time?

I've also been a little concerned about the sound of the engine. Forgive my ignorance but it sounds a little loud to me, almost like a diesel, especially on starting. However I've been told that the 1.6Fsi engine is loud because it's petrol saving, by the person that sold the car to me. Is this correct?? The Audi Dealer could not answer my query about the engine sound.

By the way Tony, I think you might have bought the A2 that I had my eye on, is it a Silver 1.4Tdi Sport that was for Sale by a Dealer on Felixstowe Road?

Kind regards,

Kazi

Hi,

The cam belt rollers and adjusters are in with the price as it come in a kit. As for the water pump this should be done at the same time, cos its cheaper to do then and there is a good chance of it failing after the cam belt has been changed.
Cheers

I agree with Eagle, water pump change is a must and a false economy if not done as sods law is that it will fail. I had a similar issue last year, a 02 1.6 fsi with 39k on it and still on it's first CAM belt. I drove it for a couple of months and then one of the rollers snapped off and started making a noise so I had it investigated, I was so lucky that it didn't snap the belt or the belt come off.

My car is coming up to 112,000 mmiles. It had a new cambelt and water pump at 60K miles, and my question is: when is the next ambelt due? - I'm guessing it's at 120K.

Anyone confirm?

Cheers,

Phil

When I test drove a 1.6FSI I was suprised how quiet and refined it was. I think you need to hear another Audi A2 to be sure.

Is there a time limit too ~5yrs?

Yes, on starting, it's especially "diesel" sounding, but just for 2-3 seconds. Then the rest of the time, I find mine also noisy (compared to the 1.4 petrol), but I'd call that sound rather "throaty". And it sounds (but not feels !) also a bit erratic.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I'm getting the Cambelt replaced at the Authorised Audi Dealers tomorrow. £369- all inclusive, and they'll check the water pump and replace the seals if it seems ok.

The engine sounds normal according to them, so it's reassuring, but Will and Fbi thanks for your advice, I really do need to hear another A2 to get a frame of reference.

Kind Regards,

Hi Kazi
The waterpump seals are not replaceable by the dealer. They are service exchange only.
As the pump must be over 5 years old, I'd insist on having it replaced as the extra strain of a new cambelt and tensioner often finish off an apparently good water pump.
Also, the plastic impellers can come loose on the pump shaft and this appears to be age related. I've read the phenolic material used for many water pump impellers absorbs water and 'grows' with age and this causes them to loosen over time. I think this will apply to Audi pumps as well.

Cheers Spike

Having just done my cambelt today, I can say that although the water pump does look ok still, I changed it as a matter of course, for one with a cast metal impeller.

Don't run the risk Kazi - if they're in there looking at the seals, then they might as well replace it with a new one.

Cheers,

Mike

the 1.6fsi does sound a bit rough - all the time until over around 2000rpm, it kind of 'ticks' until over around 1600 rpm. nothing to worry about and defo get the water pump changed at the same time - ours cost just over £400 at main agent in December.

On the other hand my allroad which had all its belts/tensioners/pump changed just 24,000 miles ago dropped a lower belt tensioner last week - resulting in the whole lot being replaced again at a cost of nearly £900!!!! I was grateful no other damage but this just goes to show, no matter how many miles between belt changes, there are no guarantees!!

On the bright side - not long now before the sum total of the parts is worth more than the car.
