Cambelt Snapped - Options/Parts 1.4 TDI 75

Paul is in Lancashire which is not a "million" miles from Cheshire. My good friend Dr. Google would be more able to give you an accurate idea.

Transportation won't be ruinous and it could well be that Paul has a contact. @depronman

So an update. I've had the car transported to my old Porsche Indy garage in Brighouse W.Yorks. One of the mechanics there has worked on the car in the past and is very familiar with it. In fact in a moment of madness when I bought a Cayenne I decided to keep the A2 and let the garage use it for running around in. Up until that point the soft touch buttons were perfect but in the hands of the unaware they succumed!

In 17yrs of ownership and near 150k miles by me the list of parts thrown at it have been minimal.
Overall it's had:
New battery - old one died after 14yrs
New radiator
AC Regas - first at 15yrs.
Injector wiring loom (very recent)
Drop links (annually!)
Consumables - discs/pads, drive belt, scheduled cam belt

That to me is not bad going for the old girl. Until it became a shop/dog transport vehicle 4yrs ago it was up/down the country by me for work. Never let me down! Bodywork was tip top until Mrs F decided to reverse into her mothers driveway and somehow scrape both doors!

I'm hoping that the garage can give it an assessment straight after Christmas and advise. I had my eye on a replacement engine on eBay but that sold! I'm presuming the 1.4tdi engine is a direct fit with just the extended pipe for the oil dipstick?

Thanks for the links to A2s Tdi for sale. I'm still thinking of buying another (can't have too many A2s can you? Pic from 2007 with HT03 is current poorly steed. X189 my first bought from Audi in 2002 at 1yr old and taken over by my late father-in law before he sold it for a TDI90) but still get mine back on the road.

So pleased and hoping your able to get this fixed! Hopefully a new timing belt plus whatever the reason for the belt failing and you will be back on the road!! Please don't do the unthinkable thou!! I have a cobalt tdi that I am likely to be breaking (unless anyone wants to take on somewhat of a basket case!) but I personally think that engine is a little rattly top end.
Best of luck, fingers crossed for you!!

I’m not convinced this engine is dead. It was only bing cranked on the starter when the belt snapped. Set the timing, fit a belt, 🤞, turn the key.

I agree. There is a belt that came off my tdi AMF in the summer your welcome to it
You can fit it and see if it runs ok
If it does then d change the belt for a new one but it’s a postage cost only trial plus the time to fit the belt

Chaps, heart warming and very generous. I'm hoping your predictions are correct. The first garage told me it had seized and they tried turning it but I'm not convinced they went far enough - ie line up the timing properly and then fit a belt so hopefully I'll get a better assessment when the mechanic Gav takes a look. A cam belt alone should give some assessment before sorting the alternator pulley and drive belt.

@Jameanicus I take it that is an A2 you are looking to sell?

It's official.

Confirmed by my garage yesterday the engine has seized. Thanks to Paul @Deproman they fitted the cam belt and tried turning the engine after lining it up etc. It turns a little then locks! Diagnosis is the original cam belt was still there but a few teeth had been stripped causing it jump out of timing.

I'm now on the fence. I love the car after 17yrs despite it being a bit rough around the edges but having full black near mint leather seats, symenko arm rests, DIS and fully working AC but I've bought another from here that looks to be in good shape and perhaps tinker with. So, I could either use the old one as a base for spares, scrap it (heart wrenching) or sell it for parts. Or get hold of a replacement engine and drop it in as it's more cost effective than an engine stripdown and rebuild I think.

I want DIS (going full on colour would be nice) in the new A2, but it's only got the small unit and I'm led to believe I'd need a complete new dash to do the upgrade?

Swapping a cluster from car to car is potentially not a big job if they are of a similiar age

Hi Paul,

Swapping a later Instrument cluster into an earlier TDI (or the opposite) is totally achievable. This is exactly what I done in the Jaipur Red A2 (2001 AMF). As part of the full DIS retrofit I performed, it’s now running a full DIS cluster from a 2005 TDI BHC, I also took the matching in-tank fuel sender, as the main difference is the resistance of the fuel level gauge then matched the new instrument cluster with the SKC as per the VCDS procedure I have mentioned many time in the past.

Kind regards,

Tom
