Cambelt.

If you were a garage, would you mark the cambelt cover with when it was done or when it was due?

As you van see it's marked 118... I'm guessing 118,000. But do you think this is when ies due or when I was changed. I have a lot of service records with the car but no cambelt changes listed at all. I bought it at 122,000.
 
If the "118" refers to the mileage of 118,000 then it could well be a second cambelt change at the correct required interval. I would wait until someone comes along with a bit more mechanical knowledge though because it could mean anything.

Since recommended intervals change now and then, it would be pretty stupid to write when it's due, rather than when it's done. That said, I don't know how it's marked.

I think the idea is that an "ordinary owner" should be able see from the label if it was due or not.

If you put the mileage at which it was changed then any such ordinary owner would not know what the interval should be.

So I think that it is long the lines of the service labels that some people put on cars, they normally state "Next service due at XXXXX miles or XX/XX/XXXX".7

This made me check mine, as it came with a verbal "it was done about 10k ago. Mileage at the time was 74k so changed around 60?
The sticker on mine is exactly the same type and has the same hand written 118! coincidence? or just the std main dealer change setpoint?
i.e I doubt they all change at 60k but recommendation may be change at 59,118,187 ect so that's what's written on the sticker?
Be nice to know?????
 
When i purchased mine, i also got the verbal "YES", along with the tick in the service record book, i also rang the garage that sold the car to the previous owner who gave me confirmation that when they sold the car 16 months previous they carried out a full service and timing belt change as they do with all there used vehicles when required.

As there was no paper record for this work carried out in the extensive service folder i got with the car it didn't give me peace of mind and i booked the car in to a local audi specialist, something i always budget for when purchasing cars.
 
Hi,

I would say that the sticker shown above in the first post was put in place when the engine was originally made. It shows the engine identification details with the engine number, build date and time and barcode (which could be scanned on the production line for identification). The message is I believe a warning that the engine is fitted with a timing belt so care should be taking when working on the engine. I don't think the 118 has anything to do with the belt replacement.

Unless you can find a date code on any of the parts fitted, I guess you would have to rely on the paperwork you have. If the belt "looks old" or shows damage it probably wasn't changed recently.

When I got mine A2, Cambelt was apparently change just short b4 that with full service etc.(was A2member) When drive in to A2Cars for next one year after. Tony just smile and was tell me that that was lots of rubish, and even not really was serviced fully previously, then lesson is NEVER trust a seller, and b4 buying any A2 drive it to A2Cars or recommended garage for check. That 118 is possible mil. of next belt change which looks like overdue already (122)
