Can paint seriously be that expensive?!

Hi guys,

Just wondering if there are any of you out ther who have a storm A2 in Misano Red? My car appears to have been rammed whilst parked so front bumper is b****red. No one owned up so I am left with the bill. I managed to get a new bumper for £150 but have phoned a couple of paint shops who did the "sucking air through teeth noise" when I meantion it was pearlescent effect paint. I responded with the same noise when I was quoted £360 from a local coachworks and £500-600 from a main dealer! Is it really that expensive a paint? Or is it the painting process? One guy mentioned it was a multi stage process??

Anyone had same experiences? I am also about to haemorrhage somewhere in the region of £1500 to stealth racing for new suspension, fixing a fecked gearbox and clutch so if you know of any good places in the Leicester or Glasgow regions please let me know!

Cheers,
Murray

It's labour time as much as anything - it's a multi-stage process so that takes several goes at it to get it done and dry, so it's the ol time is money thing. I recently paid out £250 to Superchips to sort out three scuffs on my car in the standard metallic silver so actually I think £350 for the whole bumper is probably not that bad.

You should be paying around £100-150 max to have the front bumper painted especially if you are taking the bumper in off the car as they won't have to mask or blend anything, and being pearescent makes no major difference.

Its funny when garages go on about pearescent's being a major thing, most cars come with a pearl or metalic of some sort on them and the only colour i know of that is a multi stage paint(as a std paint not custom) and thats the orange ford focus ST and that is base with a pearl over and then the clear, where most colours have the pearl in the colour with the clear over that (clear being the laquer). Most costs are also down to the paint they use as the better the paint the more it costs.

That's kind of what I was thinking too. I guess they were quite reasonable quotes in a way since the guy was asking £360 said the paint alone would cost £180!

I'm afraid he's telling you a load of balony if he's saying the paint would cost £180!!!

Most paint shops mix their own paint now and use water based paint but even if they do buy it in it's a million miles away from costing what you've been told.

Not true if they mix there own or not they still have to buy all the tinters etc.... and as i posted depending on the paint they use will depend on cost, we use gallons of the stuff at work and buy in bulk and its our biggest cost when working a car and the thing that you can't compromise on as thats the finish and the gaurantee you have to pay.

Don't forget its the primers as well plus if they run an oven you've got all the other costs involved but i would still say around the £200 mark for a full bumper paint

Just wondering, (if what i said about £180 be vastly overpriced and you saying that it is not true and then quoting £200 for the bumper to be painted) that's an awful lot of work for £20???

Hi Murray at last years AUDI IN THE PARK SHOW there was a company there promoting their paint shop. A few members had quotes and their prices are very good---robin had areas of his car re painted due to stone chips. The out come was fantastic perfect colour match(met blue)and finish was superb. He has since been back to have the front bumper skirt repaired and painted again after an altercation with a kerb-oops. Their price for removing the front bumper re pairing the broken skirt and re paint was fantastic. The company name is "rapid vehicle repairs---kettering venture park---kettering---northampton---nn15 6xr. Ask for Mike.

hope they can sort you out cheers mike

No what i said was that its not vastly over priced depending on paint they use but I wouldn't expect to pay anymore than £200 for the bumper to be painted.

Someone i polished a car for spent over £900 on a litre of colour (custom colour with heat flicks in it) car looked great but the paint in my opinion That was vastly over priced

Sorry if you took offence Phil

Absolutely no offense taken.

I just wanted to clarify what you meant as in my experience a decent independently owned paint shop will look to charge around £100 per panel, or that's what i've paid in the past anyway.

Just trying to avoid anyone being taken advantage of thats all.

Great! Thanks guys! I spoke to RVR and will take the car down when I get it back from Stealth. They didn't want to give me a price until they see the car which is always a good sign! Think I'll get my bonnet and a small ding in the driver's door sorted too. They look like a proper paint shop!
