Can't get 4th when going down the box?

This started the weekend I can go up the box but not from 5 to 4; 5 to 3 ok

I took it to the dealer who reset the gear selector linkage but this has not improved the issue they want to split the gearbox and clutch (5 hours out and in £500 + parts) so I hope someone here can shed some light or know of a audi specialist around bristol.

Update...

Well should be getting HaZeL back by the weekend.

We found a specialist in Bristol and they have been very very good.

She needed a new syncro-mesh and Horseshoe shaped selector/guide as hers was twisted.

Also a linkage item on the outside of the box was warn with the bushes missing, this could have led to the twisted guide.

anyhow when we get her back I will add photos of the ofending linkage etc.

Only costing an arm as apposed to an arm, leg and kidney.

Hi shezlee, sorry to be digging up an old thread but I had my A2 in an Audi garage yesterday with the exact same problem. Their diagnosis is it needs a new selector on gearbox, but I've no specifics on whether it's the entire unit, which if it is, at €1500 + labour to replace, I'll be saying thanks but no thanks to! I'm wondering do you have any more detail on how your problem was resolved, and if anything else was required? Part no.'s of the replaced parts would be great as I can cross-ref them with ETKA for prices, but I appreciate this is a big ask considering it was 3 years so no worries if you don't. Thanks.

Hi,
The selector on the gearbox is not that expensive and not to hard to fit (so the garage said).
the horse shoe shaped part is inside the box and that requires the box to be removed (thats 5 hours labour to remove and fit) then stripping the box and replacing any broken or damaged parts (another 6 hours labour)
I wil look for the invoices an see what parts were used and what cost.

Thanks for getting back to me shezlee, I really appreciate it.

Maybe it's all relative, but ETKA has a new selector priced at around €1500, but that's for all parts constituting it, so I'm hoping the garage isn't looking to replace the whole thing, only parts of it. I'll know on Monday. If you manage to find the invoices with details of the parts used that would be a huge help as I can take those to the mechanic and discuss them with him, and if it's a case that he believes it's the whole selector the requires replacing then I can show him your case as an example of someone with the same issue and how it was resolved.

Hi,
I have been throught the invoices and no actual part numbers are there (had this work done by an independant audi garage) but I have checked ETKA Rev 7 Update 756 for the part numbers.

I have the EWQ gearbox so part number may be different or out of date.

085 311 559 Selector shaft for 3/4 gears
02J 311 269 Synchronizer ring 4 gear
8Z0 711 203 Relay Lever (updated part) our original parts bearing bush 1J0 711 067 failed. i believe this failure caused the play in the shaft and wearing to the synchro.

As I said before labour was 11 hours but the box has been fully reconditioned and had 12 months warranty.

As for the total cost I paid £1200

Hope this helps

Thanks shezlee. Again, I really appreciate your time helping me out with this.

I have the same gearbox so having those numbers is really useful. I'll pass this on to the garage and see what they say and let you know how I get on with it all.

at vagcat.com for this gearbox have this p/n 02J 311 269B for Synchronizer ring 4 gear but in my gearbox EWQ didn't fit.
after research i found at another site that have's also p/n that fits to the gearbox and have two different p/n for EWQ,the first one p/n 02J 311 269B and the p/n 02J 311 269E.The second one is the right for my gearbox
