Car hesitates and feels like choking

Hello group
I have an 1.4 petrol 2001.
Maybe it is me not used to petrol engines, but my car shakes a bit when engaging first gear or reverse from stand still. The RPM go down and it feels like it is going to shut down if i dont give it a bit of gas.
Any suggestions??
Thank you in advance

Okay, should not really do that.

I would consider cleaning the throttle body(guide here is on the German forum), and putting some injector cleaner through. Would also consider a tank of 98, along with a good drive to get everything up to temperature, possibly using higher revs.
Has the cambelt been changed? If not, I would consider that to be pretty high priority.

It is possible there is a clutch issue (or the release bearing) but you should hear that.

Thank you Bret
The cambelt i have not chenged it, but it haz a writting on the cover that notes it was changes at 103k km. It runs good with no distinct noises, now that i am thinking of the clutch it engages at the top last 2-3cm of the pedal travel. Could this be the main culprit of the rough engaging??

possibly. Mine does the same and engages really late, but it's also 183000km old :)

I'd look at the other (cheap, simple, fast and good idea anyway) things first before the clutch.

How old is the brake fluid, may be worth flushing out and replacing it. The brake reservoir supplies the clutch slave cylinder so bleed that also. Not directly linked to the hesitation but good maintenance practice.

Brake fluid changed 5k km ago last service, including oil and filters, spark plugs, alternator belt.

Good fuel and fuel filter. How much gas (rpm) to prevent the issue? Have it scanned to see if any issues lurking.

did the problem start when the plugs where changed or soon afterwards ?

As Bret stated they are REALLY fussy on plugs, I even found that the correct plug from champion would not work correctly after 300 miles, where as NGK's where perfect for 20K miles and likely longer as I sold it after 20K miles and bought a diesel A2 :)

+900-1k rpm it is fine. I have scanned recently a week ago when the engine light came on and it was fault code 17566 manifold pressure sensor signal implausible...
But this was recent. The problem is older than that.

Perhaps a throttle body adaptation is required especially if the battery has been disconnected for a period of time. Did you by the sound of it use a generic scanner? Really do need a VCDS scan to get more info and do the throttle body adaptation.

I am looking to find some parts but it is really difficult here since there are not so many A2 around. I am not sure now about the spark pugs i have to check tomorrow what brand were they..??

Yes it was the cheap one from ebay. How to check if a throttle body adaptation is required any suggestions? Because i am planin to send my car to a guy who works at the local audi dealer. But i am sure that there is more information here about the A2 than they will ever have.?

You are correct more knowledge on here. While getting a VCDS scan have an alignment. What it does is resets the fly by wire throttle system to the fully closed position and resets the pedal to idle position. I can not give all the symptoms of TBA but does sound a good possibility for rough idle issues. Personally would have it scanned with VCDS long before going to the stealers. Would not be the first time totally unnecessary work is recommended by the dealers. I would have thought someone nearby could VCDS (VagCom was the old name) for a couple of beer tokens.
