Information Cat theft

Thanks Steve, that is interesting. Don’t mean to contradict but thought might be worth sharing that my mechanic thinks the petrol one is worth the grand sum of £20 but the diesel one more. I also have a sharan which they didn’t touch but apparently the cat in that is worth more. Doesn’t make any sense. Will try and take photos of the underside of the a2s. The petrol one which I have had since 2004 (18 years…) is well loved. It’s the one that we replaced the engine in via you (you had sold it on in Wales to someone who wanted was it the gearbox before Christmas). The diesel one I am quietly proud of - low mileage (still just in the 30s) leather, lovely condition - sad that undersides may now have been wrecked. Mechanics guesstimate is 600 each to fix. He says he is seeing so many stolen cat issues that it really has now got beyond a joke…!

30s?

Why? Is the cat attached to the frame or is it in close proximity that the scum will cause some damage?
Firstly they won’t be careful how they lift it, then it is one cut either side of the cat. Anything in the way gets cut too.
I have no experience of this but i’m reasonably sure another member had his car wrecked when the cat was stollen.

This just happened to me and my FSI - any help on sourcing replacements please?
What the actually heck is going on, so many catalytic converters being stolen?!
Do you know any details, maybe cctv footage? How's the underneath of your A2?
It's really upsetting, that some petty thieves can just simply destroy others pride and joy :(

If that were true, it just wouldn't be worth doing surely?

Apparently they go beween £200-£500, some design can worth even more. According to police data, catalytic theft doubled up last few years partly due big price increase of valuable minerals, such can be found in cats, hybrids and Toyota and Honda Jazz targeted most, but unfortunately any non-electric car could be targeted.
Some even advertise on Facebook buying of used catalytic converters, which is illegal since 2013, so if you guys see such posts, report it to website and they'll remove it.
Few days ago police raided such thieves and arrested a lot of them in Mid-West, but they can be everywhere, so we gotta make sure to follow a few safety bits to keep our cars as safe as we can.
Police advises to park near wall/fence to make access difficult, you can get the cats watermarked as well, also look for well lit and cctv covered areas to leave your car overnight, and probably the most important is to installing tilt-alarm, which comes on when the vehicle is side-lifted.
