I have now completed 75000 miles in my trusty a2 and with just 15000 miles till disposal am considering the options at change. I can not have any options on my cars except metalic paint

These are the credible choices from the list I have been given

A2 HATCHBACK 1.4 5DR
FOCUS DIESEL HATCHBACK 1.8 TDCI ZETEC 5DR
CIVIC HATCHBACK 1.6I VTEC SE 5DR
MEGANE DIESEL HATCH 1.5 DCI 100 DYNAMIQUE 5DR
LEON DIESEL HATCHBACK 1.9 TDI 90 S 5DR
AVENSIS HATCHBACK 1.8 VVT-I T2 5DR
GOLF HATCHBACK 1.6 S FSI 5DR

I am thinking of not getting the A2 again as no air con is a real pain. In my mind I have narrowed it down to the Avensis, the Megane (62.8 mpg + 60 litre tank) and the golf as I have heard they are speccing climate for free.

Any one have any helpful comments

Phil

I would probably have to agree with killabee based on that list. However of course the Leon is also a good option (thought I'd say that before Steve - ;))

the new golf is good, only thing is to many about, even new ones are poping up everywhere. depends if you like to be a sheep or stand out from the crowd

Although there must be huge differences in their prices, I'd go with the following, in this order:
- Avensis (only if it's the new model! In any case a class above any of the others, also in price)
- Civic (the VTEC engines are a real joy. Good car on the road too, but possibly bland interior)
- A2 (but not the petrol, only the diesel, preferably the 90bhp)
- Megane (very good diesel engine, I've read. But you have to like the design...I do)

I still have to say that you've come up with a strange list. What brings these cars together for you?
(edit: and what does 'no options' mean? Can you choose one of the packages that exist, like SE for the A2, or 'Sol', for the Avensis? If not, then any of these cars will be hard to digest. Renault is probably best at delivering high spec cars for base models. Honda is the worst, I think).

I am provided with a list of cars, this selection has come from that list. The details of the cars listed is how they will be supplied. Eg for the A2 it is a basic 1.4 petrol. I cannot ask for SE trim or have any options at all. The list is presumably based on lease cost.

At the moment I am thinking Avensis and Megane as both have aircon and cd player in the specs listed.

The options I consider as most essential are Air Con, CD, remote locking, elec windows. It says something of the A2's draw that I chose it without two of these options over the old avensis and old golf.

I had a new (Oct-03) 1.8 petrol Avensis for 4 weeks. It was a barge, speed humps were no problem at any speed. It held the road OK but rolled a lot.
I hated it ~ make sure you try it for a decent time before committing yourself.

PS. No offence intended to Avensis drivers - it wasn't for me!

Blasphemy I think

The Ford TDCI is the one to go for. Its a company car so what if it is being replaced in the fall?
of the motors inthe vehicles etc etc deffo THE one IMHO.

I am the Fifth Column. I am no longer an A2 owner. The A3 TDI DSG is awesome - yoof influence - I do wear a baseball cap but NOT backwards.

Mmmmmm.....(pondering runboy....)

The Avensis is the odd one out-next class up compared to the others, and more of a Sunday afternoon barge to take it easy.
Leon-as Kaine says, I love them, had one, great car, would have one again. BUT they are getting a little bit old and a new one will be out in the next 18months methinks. Or wait for the Altea...NICE car!
Focus-again, like the Leon, been around since T-reg. Still hold it's own on a drive, but interior and exterior dating a little and is being replaced soon.
Golf is good, but get a bigger engine-1.6 will just pull a skinny rice pudding.
New Astra-nice car, beats Golf in many areas, but Golf just beats it.
Civic is ok, but then you could get a Corolla (like me). Both Civic and Corolla are middle of the road-do nothing good or bad.
Megane-whoa boy. Electric problems here we come. Took a test drive in one. Well tried, the dealer tester was off the road with electronic issues and the one I drove had too many gizmos that I wouldn't trust.
Mazda3-I like it, give it a look?

I know you are limited to choice, but if there any other non-mainstream cars let us know and we can comment (i'm thinking Skoda). The above is me just rambling on!

From that list I would go for the Focus, handling, economy and low tax - check the co2 emissions and tax rate, it will put you off the petrol cars. Just changed a petrol Passat for a higher priced Accord Diesel and seen my tax bill FALL by 25%!!

2002 1.4 Petrol SE, silver with climate control.
Why are NEARLY all the A2s in Lichfield silver ? ? ?

From the list I'd choose the Focus 1.8 petrol purely because I had one before the A2 and it is a great car - plenty of poke and handles really well. If its the new Astra I'd also take a look at that one - probably more out of curiosity though, I've never got on with Vauxhalls!

Focus is due to be replaced soon, so that may/may not concern you. Avensis is a lot of car for the money and a new model. The Civic has just had an update so make sure it is the latest model. If it is the new Astra, then if it was me, I would be looking very closely indeed.

Steve - 2002 1.4SE petrol, Silver, black/black interior, Then an identical replacement 2003 A2. Now a Toyota Corolla 1.6 T-Spirit

Just had the meganne 1.6 as a hire car, not a patch on the A2 for quality, 39mpg though

Thanks for the input so far

Phil
