Changing clutch, any advice?

Just hit 166k miles on my 03 1.4 TDI and the clutch is starting to slip. Is it a straightforward DIY job and whilst doing this are there any other parts I should be replacing?

Hi torque and loctite drive shaft flange bolts 6 on each side otherwise they ate known to work loose when finished check gear box oil level. Double check new clutch plate is alighned/central to flywheel

If you are doing it on the garage floor then access is beat by removing the slam panel. The radiator comes away with the slap panel as does the a/c condenser so the a/c needs to be in gases before you start
Change the clutch spinner and cover and bearing plus the cross shaft and pivot bolt and retaining clip plus the top hat
Once the drive shafts have been removed from the gearbox (there is no need to remove from the hubs, just lift and tie the inner ends out of the way) it helps greatly to undo the screw securing the drivers side gearbox drive shaft flange so the flange can be removed as it gets in the way when removing the box
I have a machined down flange to pop back in place but without this you will need to drain the oil from the box
I also have a custom made clutch aligning tool

I will loan these out on a deposit basis if it helps you

Cheers. Paul

Thanks guys for replying and for the info. I am pushed for time and want to get this done before I sell my other car (anyone want to buy a TTRS?), so on balance, I think I'll get a garage to do it, but the above will help me to make sure they know how to do it first.

Really like the look of your TTRS, don't see many in red! very tempted as the Golf R is to be sold  and I fancy a TTRS or RS3
Shame you are so far away....fancy a weekend in Wales?

I would, particularly as my son lives in Cheltenham, but I need to sell by this weekend (as I am going in for a big op next week), that is why I have dropped the price and will sell through Wizzle if I can't sell privately. The TTRS is a different driving experience to the RS3, I tried both and the TT was just more fun being lighter and different setup.

one other bit of advice. go for a reputable brand. LUK or Valeo seem to get good reports. I had a woeful rattle from a lesser known brand. Possibly a combination of that brand with a 6 speed box but why chance it.

Thanks for getting back to me.
I'll have a good think today/tomorrow, my only concerns are the mileage (a little higher that I wanted) and buying a car privately for that sum of money.
I've always bought from a main dealer with their minimum 1 year warranty for piece of mind.

Sorry....post a little off-topic

Sorry to keep the swerve off topic, but you can take out a warranty yourself with Warrantywise - they are excellent and don’t try and shirk genuine claims. Worth looking into if you want the peace of mind.

Regarding third party warrantys i would avoid those that only pay once the job is complete as many private garages dont want or need any potential hassle!

As above, Warrantywise have been brilliant, they pre-authorise the job before it’s carried out (and respond to a claim within 24 hours so the car isn’t stuck in the garage for days while they chew on it).

Case in point: My Touran is in the garage at the moment for a cam belt, they are fixing the media port under warranty and reported this to WW and got the go-ahead almost straight away: then the garage snapped the (seized) bleed nipple on one of the front callipers off, Warrantywise are accepting that as part of the claim too!

Honestly I cannot recommend them enough. Anyway I think we’d better get back on-topic!

Well.... I got the local garage to change the clutch and whilst the clutch is fine, the gearbox is now noisy (at least I am assuming it is the gearbox) when in neutral and foot off the clutch. Immediately you put your foot on the clutch the gearbox noise disappears.

Before I confront the garage over this can anyone explain what could be the cause of this?

Thanks

My MY2011 mk2 manual TTRS was Misano red :) I did love that colour

On the A2 as Proghound has stated if its making a noise you need to go back and ask. When changing the clutch the bearing change is essential I just hope they didnt put it back in

Haha!

I imagine the garage did change the bearing, but the new bearing was defective hence a noise became apparant?

But good to get closure!
