Changing from rear drums to discs.

Maybe the " was dropped in 2008" was a typo and should re 2003 as later it says "(I am assuming here that your car is an earlier one up to 2003?). "

Just a thought

"Dropped" is the terminology that Audi use to indicate replacement part obsolescence rather than production changes. Where a production change requires a different part to be fitted as replacement depending on the VIN of the car involved, both versions of the part would be required for repair purposes, especially if they are not similarly exchangeable.

When the availably of particular part for repair replacement is superseded, the original part is "dropped" and a different part number is offered instead as a "replacement". E.g. you can't get the original brake pads any more as they have been dropped but a different part is available instead. There can be a chain of obsolescence where the replacement parts themselves are dropped and replaced by others and so on.
What's a problem is when a part is dropped and no replacement is available.

Sometimes, as it looks like in this case, availability of an earlier production version of a part is dropped and the replacement is to use the equivalent part used in later production. The later part however may not be a like for like replacement and so necessitate the use of other parts that match.

Hi,

Just to repeat the thanks for all of the helpful posts about this.

I am still certain that it was a case of the A2 that this came from having had a replacement later axle, perhaps someone even modified a Polo axle to make it fit (using the bush adapters from Audi?)

So I am not blaming Prestige, they have carried out a fairly extensive check to see what could have happened (they wouldn't have done that if they were not sure that the axle was taken from an A2.

So I am collecting another FSI axle that was advertised on eBay by a member, I will get my mechanic to check that all of the parts now fit and then off to the powder coaters again to have it blasted, zinc coated and powder coated. Then start the whole process over again.

I don't plan on asking for my money back from Prestige (because I believe them) I will now have a blasted and powder coated axle that I can't sell because I really wouldn't be able to sell it to someone in the knowledge that it might not be what I think it is! I already have a member on here that wants the old axle from the project (I won't be charging him but don't tell him!!)

So I will just put this down to experience and hopefully it might prevent this from happening to another member. But they would have to be really unlucky to get the same type of A2 axle that I managed to buy.

Onwards and upwards!!!

Another question about rear axle parts please?

The calliper carriers are proving to be a pain to source. I have been told the following

"They are handed", "They are not listed for a TDI 90", "We have the right hand one but not the left hand one (several people have told me that"

They look almost identical, are they "Handed"? I don't seem to be able to tell from any parts listings.

Thanks

They're definitely handed. That's not to say its impossible to fit the wrong one to the wrong side (ok pedantically, the correct one to the incorrect side....you know what I mean); and not to say it will work incorrectly.

Thanks, I suspected that to be the case but after the axle fiasco I like to be sure.

The rear brake section of the parts catalogue is separated into drum or disc brake options and the 'disc' section does not specifically refer to the 90 tdi (or FSi for that matter)
As stated above, the carriers are handed, with the LH (passenger side) having p/n 6Q0 615 425A, now superseded to 425D. Price is about £80.
There are some listed on ebay.de if you can't find a UK source - http://www.ebay.de/itm/Audi-VW-Seat...414977?hash=item5405137881:g:a~sAAOSwHnFV1LNs

Steve,
I have both discs and calipers+pads (front and rear actually and fairly new condition on the discs and pads) from Yorkshirehills 2003 FSI.
I had intended to keep as spares in case I needed them, but it seems crazy you buying second hand ones from a scrap yard when I have good condition ones crated up in my garage. Suggest a price including postage (and I insist you use the Birchall Pricing Formula) and they are yours.
If you want calipers only that's fine.

Hi,

That is great offer thank you.

The problem is I have just this minute hit the Buy it now button on new ones I found on eBay by using the Audi Part number 6Q0615425 and 6Q0615426 and somehow I managed to find both, even though I had been searching for "A2 Carrier" several times.

The ones I have found are the "D" version of these and they are the right part (and in the UK too). £57 a pair (a lot less than £80 each from Audi).

Sorry to turn down your great offer but I clicked and paid one minute before spotting your post.

I LOVE this forum, so many people helping each other.

Great!

Thanks again all.

No worries Steve.
PM me or post on here if you need the caliper carrier etc as from memory I have them too, depends on what your axel comes with as to whether you need them!

It was the calliper carriers that I needed and just bought. I have new callipers already.

Cheers

If this is't rude to write to this old topic I'm sorry but I tumpled to this. One of my FSI rear calibers was badly seized and as A2 FSIs are very rare here and I couldn't find calibers or pistons. I searched Polo parts and found 34 and 38mm calibers and they both fit, 38mm cost as low as 40£ on Ebay UK.

I'm sure your finding will be helpful to someone in the future. One of the good things re the A2 is that there are often more common substitute parts from other VW models. All helps to keep our A2s on the road.

PS. Had a good holiday in Helsinki a few years back (but not with the A2). Beautiful country and friendly people.

I went for 38mm piston parts as there seems to be more spares for them so maybe I get rear wheel drive like behavior if there is going to be real winters in future. Don't bother me much as only 2/12 of my cars are FWD.
Welcome back on holidays if Your are not barbwired to Your islands in future, average Finn outside Helsinki may need a little bit of melting first but allmost everybody speaks some kind of english when they get the courage to open their mouths :)
