Cheapest way into VCDS?

I've seen that on a specific cable with a couple of different laptops and the cable simply refused to be seen. No matter what I did.
I am assuming that you have installed the drivers that were supplied with the cable and that you've also checked that some form of serial port exists? I would expect COM3, 9600, 8, N 1 to work, but if the port doesn't exist, it doesn't exist. You may need to add it manually in device manager (run as an Admin!), but your disc should also have brought drivers with.

Yep, I installed the vcds lite directly from the cd. I am assuming that the driver was installed at the same time. There are no other set up files or exe files that I could see in the folders, Something doesn’t feel right as it shouldn’t be this difficult. I had a look in device manager and the cable is picked up. But when you click it, it says driver not found.

Drivers are on the disc but you have to specifically request to load drivers from the disc. However I would try it on a car first as that information box in the picture is exactly what I had.

I think the screen shot points to vcds not finding a suitable port on the PC.
If it's the car not plugged in, you get something like "port status OK, interface not found"
Firstly, did you run the test on all four ports, displayed on the top left of the first screen, 1,2,3&4?
If not do that. If one of them still doesn't work, then the correct cable driver is not being found.
The driver must be installed, before you plug the cable in for the first time, if not a standard USB driver is used, which does not work.
To fix this you have to remove the device, (cable), install the driver, restart the PC, then plug the cable in.
Lastly, it is unwise to install the copy of VCDS Lite on the disc that came with the cable, always download a genuine copy from the Ross-Tech website.
To remove the cable, use Device Manager.
Mac.

This is what you'll see, if the VCDS Lite software, driver, and cable are correctly installed. When you see this screen, it should work when plugged into the car. Performance may be improved by reducing the "Latency" setting, in Device Manager.
In Device Manager, you can also change the allocated port, if you want to.
The key thing to remember is that the cable driver must be installed before the cable is plugged into the PC for the first time.
