hi there

Just got an X reg 1.4 SE -- all lovely apart from what appears to be a non-functioning cigarette lighter.

Don't wish to smoke but do wish to charge phone etc -- manual states that you simply press the knob and then the lighter pops up but mine doesn't ...it appears to be stuck or the element simply isn't heating. Should the knob be flush or sticking out a little when not in use?

Anyone else have a non-functioning lighter?

Cheers

have you tried plugging in your phone charger yet? does it charge?

maybe the phone charger will work even if the ciggy lighter thing doesn't.....

Well, no that's the problem -- I can't get the lighter out of the socket to put a charger in!

Hi Kookhaus,

The plastic surround that contains the lighter is fairly easy to remove (see fitting guide for 'front centre tray' on http://www.audi-a2.co.uk/guides.htm). So what you could do is remove the unit and actually look at the lighter and why it is jamming. It sounds as if maybe the plastic surround of the lighter may be damaged or melted?! Either way, if you contact Martyn at VAG Parts (http://www.vagparts.com) he can get the replacement parts for you which you'll be able to fit yourself using the same guide above and hopefully it'll all work out. If you join the A2OC, you can also get 10% off any purchases with vagparts.

One reason why the lighter may not be popping out is that there is no power going to it, so when you push it in, it just stays in. Maybe there is a loose connection at the back of the lighter? You'll be able to check this if you follow my suggestion above...

Agreed, take the unit out and see if anything obvious is wrong with it.

Just to check,

Have you checked the fuse? if this is OK have you pushed the lighter right in? should click..

If this does not happen and the lighter comes straight out again there could be a problem with the spring clips that hold the lighter in (these spring out when they reach a certain temp.)

If your phone charger does not charge (check it workes in another car to be sure. We don't want to take your A2 apart) and it is pushed in fully then the items need to be removed as per the fitting guide.

It may be a case of loose connection (it will only fit one way) if not then check the wiring (will need an electrical tester) if this is OK then a new lighted is in order.

Hope this helps

Definately try the fuse. Mine stopped working after my phone charger connector fell apart and I think some metal part connected the side plate to the centre and blew the fuse. The symptom I had before I found the fuse blown was the lighter do not heat up and stuck. Fuse are very easy to change, I got a pack of 3 15Amp fuses for 99p from Motor Mania.

From a similar experience with my A6 I discovered that:
a) the cigarete lighter was pushed in at would not release
b) the fuse was blown
c) putting new fuses also blew

Diagnosis. The cigarette lighter had been pushed in so hard it had shorted the circuit.
Solution. Pull inner part of cigarette lighter free to remove short.

You can check the short by using a test meter on the cigarett lighter (saves on fuses !)
