Clonk/Bang from rear of car

Hi guys,

I finally collected my 2004 1.6 yesterday, drove home without incident around 90 miles (no back ache!) and was impressed by the performance, ride etc. When I left the Mway however I drove over a road hump and there was quite a loud bang (more so than a clunk) from the offside rear. The same thing happened when I drove over poor road surfaces - holes in the surface (lots of them in Oxfordshire). I had a quick look under the car and couldnt see anything obvious wrong. It reminded me of a broken spring or maybe a shocker separating from its mount but does this sound familiar to any of you guys? The dealer is prepared to sort the car out (as they are obliged to) but as you can guess its a hell of a hassle to return the car to them given the distance.

Thanks Keith

I would also check in the boot. Lots of bits and bobs could be loose and banging about.
I had convinced my self that I must have had a worn ball joint on the front --- as when I pulled away I got this odd thump sound. IT ENDED UP BEING MY LED TORCH HAD COME OUT OF IT'S POUCH AND WAS ROLLING ABOUT !!!!! Cheers mike

Thanks for the comments guys, I did hope it was the boot floor to start with (the central portion is missing and this lets the rear section jumped about and bang) and took that out before testing again to no avail, so no loose bits. Today I heard the same sound but..now Im not so sure its from the rear, it could be the front! Its a shame because other than that and the knakered radio display I am very impressed by the car. More investigations needed but the links helped and Im coming to the conclusion that my suspicion of broken spring or damper is likley to be the culprit. I think I'll get the selling garage to come and collect it and sort it out under warranty.
Cheers Keith

So after more research I concluded it was the ARB/Roll bar and/or drop links - the seller picked it up last Wednesday and confirmed my suspicions on Friday after checking the car out. So now they are waiting for a new roll bar to arrive and in the meantime being a Lexus dealer they have left a nice Lexus for me to swan about in until my A2 is returned..
Thanks again for the guidence guys

That's great news that you have got to the bottom of your banging noises. It sounds like you are getting a good service from the dealer, picking up your car and leaving a nice Lexus for you:)

They could have saved themselves a lot of hassle and money if they had given it a proper going over before they gave it to you.

Cheers

David

Yeah I replaced my ARB drop links on Saturday and it fixed some clunking noises and the car feels better now. Also my rear shocker dust covers have dropped on each side and need replacing, so I'm going to do the rear shocks/covers/stops in one go.

I should have said I had a trained Audi specialist replacing these bits, I can't really do the mechanics, just the electronics.... :)

Finally the A2 was delivered back to me today with a shiny new ARB and bushes fitted and a short drive confirmed that the clonking has now gone so now..finally I can get to enjoy the car. The display on the radio was also knakered so a replacement from Ebay was found for fifty quid (needed to change the radio facia over) and thats also running nicely now too. All I need to do now is sort the boot floor out..thought I had a source of panels but so far none has come up trumps so I may just fabricate one.
I noted a comment elsewhere about the "notorious 17" wheels" which mine has and assume this refers to the ride quality..if so you guys need to try a mini, the missus has a cooper-s works and the ride was appalling (it was on stupidly sized 18" wheels) and although its now much better since I moved to 17" wheels and higher profile tyres, the A2 is as smooth as silk in comparison (the mini is a tad quicker though!).
Thanks for the tips and advice guys.
Keith
