Cold Starting Update (1.4 TDi)

Thought this might be useful if anybody else comes across this.

One of my original threads http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8842 pointed possibly towards fuel filter issues but alas there is a big twist to the story which I will try and make brief.

Before all this happened I had what I thought was a starter fault and I checked most avenues and I changed the Starter Motor (got a 'pattern' one locally). After I done this I still had an Earth Fault. Found the fault but kept the new starter on (I'm sure anybody else would). It was Summer and everything was fine but when Winter kicked in at low temps the starting issue appeared and this was when a lot of info pointed at the fuel filter.

In my second Winter of this happening input from friends thought it was a starter problem. I took the plunge before my recent service and fitted my original starter back on. Alas at -6C it started first time! which I know wouldn't have happened before.

It would appear the pattern make starter has a lesser spec. and knocks the solenoid out too quick when it starts to fire which in cold conditions needs a few extra turns.

I hope this is useful to others and thank Skipton & Spike who support and help
everytime on these issues (as well as other input from various members).

Regards

Roy
