Coolant temperature sensor TDI90

Just got round to fitting the thermostat to my father's TDI 90 there at the weekend, wasn't too bad- as most have said, the bottom 10mm bolt is a pain without a slimline ratchet. I used the 209440040 as per Paul and Robin.

Took a few pics of the old and new for comparison. The old was genuine Audi, the new Circoli. They are similar, but the spring in the aftermarket one is thinner. It works fine, temperature on the gauge now at 90degC for the first time since we got the car.

Lost a fair bit of coolant, but no harm as it was seriously discoloured, red brown colour not the usual bright pink. The expansion tank is brown too, so looks to have been a fair bit of rust or something in there at some point. The rad looks new, so I wonder was it replaced and the system not flushed, or would head gasket issues cause the brown colour.. not sure - anyway, a flush is planned soon and we'll keep an eye on it from there.

We did an oil change as well and fell cropper to the dipstick end breaking off on the final level check - I heard the snap and stopped, unclipped the extension tube but alas couldn't get the end piece - must have went down in. So must get a new end from Paul.

Also sounds like a camshaft and possibly crankshaft sensor is due - on a few instances lately the car has either taken a while of cranking to start or failed to start. At the weekend while the A2 was with me it started, sounded rough then died again. A few minutes later and it started fine, no issues at all for the next 1.5 days. Did a VCDS scan and got the camshaft position sensor G40 P3007 no signal, intermittent code.
From reading around, I though a camshaft sensor error would not cause the car to die, but a crankshaft sensor issue would??

Was doing some part number research for another green sensor due to some quirks with my temps and noticed this post about rust.

Its most likely that the wrong coolant has been used / mixed and as a result it goes brown. G13 is the recommended coolant given it replaced the original VW recommended G12.

Thanks Cheechy, that's a good point - could be the cause alright. Will know when I get it flushed and the G13 renewed.
