Corrosion / rust

UPDATE:

Good news! I have just got back from a meeting with Audi's representative sent to assess the 'corrosion' and he is happy to pass the car for a repair under the terms of the warranty.

He gave it a good look at with a magnifying glass and checked all the aluminium panels with some kind of electronic tester (panel or paint thickness?). He said it was unusual to see this kind of corrosion, especially on an aluminium car, and will report back to Audi. I guess I was just unlucky.

Anyway the outcome is just what I wanted so I'm happy. The work is booked to be done in 3 weeks time, should take 3 days and I'll have an A3 to drive around in the meantime - all for £0.00. Result.

Congratulations Jimbertmate!! :)

It is rewarding to hear a success story, especially one where the 'common man or woman' is on the receiving end of some good will from a multi-national corporation. (Not that I am calling you 'common' you understand!!;))

It is a shame that the corrosion occured in the first place, but I guess your good fortune shows that there is hope for anyone else who encounters similar defects. When all is said and done, if this was a problematic issue, Audi would not have offered a 12 year anti-corrosion warranty in the first place.

Enjoy the A3, but I bet you will be longing to get your A2 back!!

Cheers,

Darren

By the way: If it realy is Alumina which get oxidised, it is not oxide. It is hydroxide.
Al(OH)3. I know it for shure, because the Technical University of Berlin found out (for me).
The attached document has my copyright.
It is the first diagramm. The second also found some grafite, wich is for lubricante the rear mirrors to move to the door and back in theyr position.
The analysed substance was taken from the casting aluminum fron the outside mirror triangle.

We even didn't gave this information to the Audi AG but we planned to do so.

erstens (diploma student, chemistry, TU-Berlin, Germany)

But I am really wondering about this door. There must have been some damage before... This does not happen to an A2 out of 10000s

corrosion on an A2!!??

Hi Folks!
My Wife has owned a petrol A2 for over 4 years and I have just purchased a 2001Y diesel A2. It is high spec with leather and the sunroof. The mileage is 102,000.....is that reasonable and what can they accumulate without any significant problems, please? I was suprised to notice several blisters under the paint, around the rear wheel arches and near the windscreen, on the front pillars! Hey, the bodywork is aluminium, isn't it, and surely "rust" blisters aren't to be expected, under the paintwork surface? What should I do, now? I am a bit concerned about rubbing down to the bare metal and "touching-in" with a stone-chip paint stick.... it could be a never-ending battle, every time I see a new blister!. I think that the last car owner lived in a coastal location, so the car may have been subjected to some sea-effect conditions. This is only a possibility, though. I ask if any other owners of older examples of the A2 have seen similar blisters? Also, your help on how to deal with those blisters and yet to still keep the car looking good! Thank you, in anticipation of any help and advice that you can give....David

Hi David,

My A2 is also 2001 Y reg, and bizarrely also on 102,000 miles. Anyway, this exact corrosion happened on my car in 2007. You can read my thread about what happened here: http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?t=5016

It was repaired under the 12 year paintwork warranty. Strangely I have now noticed another area starting to 'bubble up' on the rear offside door, again just under the window rubber. The car is booked in on Monday 16th for the dealer to inspect it. If I have any trouble I shall just refer them to 2007!

So my advice to you is go see your dealer and ask for it to be repaired under the warranty.

James

Any photo's would be good to see what you are experiencing and for the record plastic doesn't rust (arches) so i would say its a paint issue there

James this will be interesting, as I was told (Chingford Audi Stealership) that the doors are not part of the 12 year body warranty, another stupid rule I thought at the time and duly forgot to research it, please keep us informed.

Cheers

The roof panel is the worse, quite a large blister.
I should be able to get audi to sort this shouldn't I.
I read in the linked thread above that it was done at MK audi, which is ideal as I live in MK

Wow!.... is this going to open the proverbial "can of worms" ? How many more of you out there with similar problems? On my vehicle (2001Y) there are three blisters... N/S front pillar leading edge, next to the tax disc (~25mm diameter), then two blisters under the rubber capping of the O/S rear door. The first blister is at the open-end start (~20mm) and the other blister at the hinge end of the door (~10mm) I am sorry that there are no photos.... the Wife has taken the camera with her to Holland! \\i've looked all round the Wife's car (2002) and not a blister in sight! Is it a problem just waiting to happen???. Like, 8 years+ and here they come? I don't want to just be waiting for the next blister to appear, or to see them getting larger and larger! I will take pictures when I get that camera back! Please give feedback if you too have any blisters on the paintwork, or let me know that this is very uncommon.... thanks for your replies up to now!.... David

Dose the 12 yr warranty covered apply if you have bought you car second hand from a none Audi garage

Does anyone know if the 12 year warranty applies to cars which do not have full Audi maindealer service history?

I have claimed on the 12 yr warranty from VAG twice, firstly on my 1998 A3 and then on the wifes 2001 Lupo. The car had a full dealer history and they paid part of the repair for bubbling paint under the doors bump strip. It was less than 5 years old at the time and I was the second owner. It was a real struggle to get them to honour the claim, and a few letters went back and fore between me and Audi UK, and I had to get a couple of assessments of the damage.

On the Lupo, we claimed for bubbling paint at the roof line. This was honoured in full with no hassles, again we were the second owner - car was 6 years old with a fully stamped service history, VW up to 2 years old, indepenent after this using genuine parts.

So yes, I think the 12 year warranty is fine provided there is a history of maintenance as per manufacturers guidlines, and the number of owners should be immaterial.

Strikes me as ironic to this day that VW were no bother with my claim and I had the runaround from Audi. It was the same garage that did both repairs.

yes but whats bubbling paint work got to do with service history would they say anthing to you if you had a bubbling paint work.

Im going to take mine into MK audi in a weeks time and see what they say.

Like you say, maintenance of the car does not affect the paint work, so I cant see how they would use that as an excuse to fix a manufacturing defect

nothing really - but you can bet that dealers will ask about it, and if you look at some associated audi forums like audi-sport, there is a long thread on corrosion warranty claims, and I think it helps your case if there is proof that the car has been properly looked after.

Ref ULP's post, I dont recall reading anything in the service book about bodywork inspections, must dig it out again and have a read.

the reason i say this is that i have bubbling paint work on the boot just under the class, not much i must say

I have lots of bubbling in several areas of the car. I was under the impression that it was the clearcoat crying uncle after 10 years of mediterranean sun and pigeon droppings - are you telling me that it is corrosion causing this? I'll fish for my camera to get some shots of my A2. Your mind will boggle!
