Corrosion / rust

Hi all great forum.

my wife's 2005 has a bubble on the front passenger door on the leading edge starting under the black trim of the window, about 3mm in size just in front of the mirror. Its a bit of a water trap between the rubber and the panel

Also looking around it is starting to bubble on the rear driver side door in the same place.

What other areas are prone to this? So I can have a good check around the rest of the car.

Do I just take it to my local Audi to look at it or do I need to do anything 1st to help the claim.

Hi tris101, welcome to the A2oc
Blistering paint is not a big problem on A2s but from the previous posts in this thread you can see which areas others have have had similar issues with.
I'd make an appointment to have the paintwork inspected then make sure the car is immaculate inside and out when you take it in - just to show its well cared for. Owning the car from new is a plus point and if it has a full Audi service history, even better, again these things show the car has been looked after. Be polite in all the discussions and try and get over that you are very happy with the car, apart from the blemishes on the paintwork. For me this always works better than moaning about previous problems. Its possible you may have to take it back for a second inspection by the Audi area rep - if so, make sure the car is clean again.
Hopefully other club members who have had paintwork done under warranty will offer additional advice

Cheers Spike

Thanks spike,

My wife is the 2nd owner It has service history but not Audi. Looking at the service list in hand book there is not a body work check for Audi to do and sign off. I will be in Norwich on Saturday so I will pop into the dealers and see what they say.

It looks like the most affected places are:

Leading edge of doors just under rubber below glass.
Front A pillars around glass and base.
Roof along edge of gutter.
Boot below rear glass.
And some report around wheel arches.

I guess putting in the glass and sealing rubbers damage the paint in these areas and exposure over time causes the paint to bubble.

I poped into Norwich Audi on saturday as we were passing and spoke to a guy on the service desk. He said we would need to bring the car back in the week for it to be checked and the paint thickness tested.

He also said at most Audi will only pay % of the repair cost and I would need to pay the rest and I should bare this in mind.

He did not look at the car or take any details from me.

I have phoned them today and waiting for a ring back.

Its not even easy to get someone to look at the car.

Adrian called me back yesterday and told me I need to speak to Mark as he handles these issues, I was told its a 10 minute job and I don't need an appointment just pop in during the week. He said Its best to call Mark before setting off so he can get ready for you.

I arranged to have the wife's car today, spent a couple of hours cleaning it this morning. I then phoned Mark to say I was going to pop in and guess what, he said I cannot see it today and it needs to be booked in. So it’s now booked in for Tuesday next week at 1:30p

So 1 visit and 4 phone calls later, I now have a time slot.

This is not going well!! I don’t hold out much hope.

I took the car in and had to wait around for an hour even know I had booked a time slot.

Guy on service desk took my details and again said Audi would only pay a % of the cost maybe up to 60-70%. I said that kind of makes the 12 year warranty a bit pointless and explained I would be unhappy unless the full cost was meet. He said to leave it with him. The guy did not seam very interested and his manner defiantly had room for improvement.

I had a phone call 5 days later telling me audi will cover 100% of the cost and bodyshop will be in touch, so good news.

That's great news, well done. When the car goes in, it would be very helpful if you could ask the dealer for some details on the authorisation of this work from Audi (might be a campaign code or reference number for them to invoice the work to)

This info posted on this thread would be very useful for anyone else making contact with Audi about this and could save lots of negotiation and runaround

Again, well done and very good news. :D

If you take the car in, do you think they would need to repair all the blisters?

I lifted the door seals the other day and there is blistering all along the length of the seal.

Would they just sand the area down and then respray the affected area??

Odd Corrosion on rear door

Hi,

Does anyone have any ideas of what the cause of this corrosion could be?
Are there any screws or other parts that could cause a reaction in this area and is it best to leave it or try to do something about it?
It has been like this since I bought the car but the paint seems largely intact on top of it.
Also would this be something covered by the anti-corrosion warranty and if so was this an 11 year warranty? (I remember reading of it in the thread about the hinges)
If so is it best to take it to the dealer?

I don't know the cause. But John Wingnut had the same problem on his roof. He won a voucher at audis in the park and had his roof resprayed. I think others have the same problem.

Cheers

Its oxidisation of the aluminium and its quite common I'm afraid. Theres a tiny blister on our drivers door; I think its likely to be caused by moisture retention under the window rubber. There isnt any screws or anything under there; you can simply prise that rubber up to expose the extent of the reaction. I tend to look out for this when I see A2's close up and its quite widespread. Like David said, its also known to happen at the corners on the roof and at the seam between then rear window and the tailgate.

( Henderson feels the scaremonger as the A2OC rush outside to inspect their motors!) :p

I saw an X plate TDi earlier this year which had an area about 2" square affected on both off side doors. It wasnt the best cared for example I've ever seen.

Other members have successfully claimed for this on the 12 year bodywork warranty. Its not a paint issue so cover should be OK and all the better if you have a full service history.

I intend to claim on ours and get the area affected painted; just not got round to it yet. I have a PM from the member who successfuly claimed for this fault, although he had owned since new I think and the car had a full Audi history. That 'shouldnt' be a stumbling block, but it does seem to help with claims.

I took the car to the dealer today and they have sent some photos and a report off to Audi.
They also told me that in Norway for cars over 7 years the warranty worked by Audi paying 70% and me paying the remaining 30%. This seems odd to me as there is no damage to the paint and as such the damage is not due to me not taking care or similar.
Has anyone else heard of Audi trying similar? I could understand that with a steel car rust is more common but for aluminium under paint it points to a manufacturing defect/quality control problem.

I await their response and wonder what the proosed repair will be. Other than this spot of corrosion the paintwork and car are in perfect condition.

They did not question the service history or anything like that but could not remember the warranty length. As the car was bought in Germany and has the original documentation I assume this should be the one to work on.

I was impressed that the dealer inspected the problem and sent a warranty claim into Audi within 20 minutes of me asking and hope for a positive response!

Quoted out of the service book.

Extended paintwork and body warranty.

Audi dealers provide a warranty on the paintwork and bodies of all vehicles purchased from them.

In addition to the warranty terms for new audi vehicles as specified in the contract of sale, Audi dealers also give a paintwork and body warranty on vehicles Sold by them. This provides

* 3years guarantee from the date of delivery against pain defects and

* 12 years guarantee from the date of deliverary against rust perforation in the paintwork.

However, should this type of damage occur,it will be repaired free of charge for parts and labour by any aui dealer in Europe.

Warranty claims under the extended paintwork and body warranty will Not be accepted if:

* damadge is caused by external factors or inadequate care of the vehicle

*damadge to the bodywork or paint has not been repaired promptly and correctly In accordance with the manufactures requirements

* or if there is a causality between perforations in the body and body repairs not having been conducted properly in line with manufactures guidelines.

It seems they cover rust, but as our cars don't rust they oxocide. My hunch is they say it's not covered but offer you a goodwill payment. Hence the offer to cover 70% of the repair costs.

Good luck let us know how you get on.

Cheers

David

The issue was not that of it being aluminium and so not rust but rather a point of "principle" from the dealer as he stated:
"that after 7 years clearly your ownership must have had some impact and so we will expect you to contribute. Usually 70% dealer, 30% owner"
However the terms you have laid out and the fact the vehicle was purchased in Germany and then imported make me wonder if they will not reconsider assuming that Audi approve the repair.
The technician seemed to accept the problem and that it was not caused by anything I/the previous owner had done to the car.
I guess if approved and the dealer wants to charge I could take the car to a Finnish or Swedish dealer and hold to the original Guarantee?

Corrosion

I have Corrosion on 2 of my doors. Audi are offering a good will repair where they will pay 70% of the cost the car is 11 years old, means i will end up paying about £230, do we think this is a good offer ?

The approval is covered as factory goodwill as 70% parts, labour and material. This is based on the group services evaluation that the exhibited corrosion is edge and fold and not through-corrosion (normally in a central area of panel or body) therefore it is not covered 100% within the 12year corrosion terms.

That's interesting. Quite a few members have this problem. So they are saying if it was not near a edge then they would pay %100?

Stick to your guns on this. Other members have had a full warranty repair on this exact issue as David states so challenge before you pay anything. I'll pm you details of an Audi garage that has processed a 100% repair. I have vested interest in supporting this as I intend to claim on this myself.
