Cruise control

I'm picking up my 1.6fsi sport onn saturday and I can't wait!

Does anyone know if it is possible to retro-fit o/e cruise control? My local car electronic shop can fit a custom kit but I would much prefer the genuine one. I know on a lot of vws you just have to buy the control unit and have the on board computer activated for cruise control.

Anyone tried this?

Also, does anyone know where I can get a backbox/system for the 1.6fsi engine? I can only find 1.4's listed.

Hi DESIGN70,

Welcome to the forum. If you try the search option, and tick the archives box, you can find some previous discussions about retro fitting cruise control.

I did a quick check and found these on page 6 & 7 of the results;

Hope that helps

It seems as though there is no definite answer...

I'll ask the dealership when I get the car and see what they say.

I installed it in my 2002 1.4, and it works just fine.

I'll post some more details when I get home in a couple of weeks.

Are you home yet? :)

I had a quote from AMD to have it fitted to my 1.4tdi - they checked the engine number on their system and said it was ok but some models are not compatible with a retrofit option. Cost was about £300 without the club discount - I put it off but now wish I had done it as I miss it soooo badly with all the long motorway driving I do for work.
Might well give AMD another call and get it sorted finally esp with the 15% discount!

I thought AMD went bust and is no more?

You're in luck,

I've just got our car (1.6fsi) back from the dealer after getting the OEM stalk fitted.

I got the cruise/indicator stalk from VAGparts. I'd checked with the technical guys at my dealer and they said it was a simple job to wire it into the ECU (if the loom wasn't already in place). They charged about an hour to do it. You need VAGcom to enable cruise in the ECU, but in theopry you could fit it yourself.

I'd imagine that doing this to new cars would be frowned upon by Audi UK as its much cheaper than the option price!

I'm not quite clear on this DaveS. What is VAGcom or who is it? I can understand being able to fit the stalk myself - but I know I'll need help to set the computer - and I equally know that me dealer is not enthused. But so can I get VAGcom to do this?

And your dealers name is 'Martins'? And they are located where?

TIA, Tuck

Martin is the main man at VAGparts (found on the web). The A2OC has a deal set up with them for discounts if you are a member.

VAGcom is the tool used to talk to the A2's computer. You can buy the hardware and software but it isn't cheap and you need to have an understanding of what you're looking at.
A2OC purchased one of these tools for members use at social gatherings.

Don't drink drive! Not only is it socially unaceptable, it also harms A2's.

Martins is in Basingstoke.

Though my cruise is currently not working - it needs a special loom piece - the plug that was under the dash did not work...

Well, mine is booked into Lancaster Audi in Liverpool tomorrow morning, they've quoted me £160 all in. Happy days, I'll let you know how I get on.

Latest news on ours is that Audi UK Technical reckon it should work as is - e.g. plugged straight into the loom plug that was there waiting, no other loom peice required.

Head techie is back in today so hopefully they will be able to get their heads round it and have another go.

Design70, if yours works let me know !

Head techie says that we need to run a 4 wire cable rom the switch direct to the ECU.

Its going back in on the 15th. Why can things never be easy !

Audi refused to fit it - they claimed the wiring was missing to a new loom would have to be fitted and they quoted me £700 (!!!)

Looks like I'll be going to AMD or not bothering at all. Thought it was too good to be true. The guy at the dealers inferred that Audi hq stopped them from doing the install for me as it was half the price of the official option.

Anyone know how I can find out for definite if the wiring is present or not?

Cheers

Saw something on a Ford forum the other day which said you did not need a PC link to enable rero fit cruise, just disconnct the battery and re-connect. The ECU startup checks find the cruise control and automatically enable it - wonder if the A2 does this?

It will work, but only if the wiring between the ECU , cruise switch, brake switch & clutch switch is present. Given the diagrams you could do it yourself, but you'll invalidate your warranty.

AMD make up a loom piece to bridge the gap left by the Audi OEM loom.

Our FSI did not have teh correct connectivity and the dealer would not touch the loom unless Audi could supply a retrofit kit - which there is none available.

Just annoying that Audi do different looms for cruise/non-cruise cars.
I'm guessing that the £700 is for getting a complete OEM loom with cruise wiring installed.
