Dash Cams

Wasn't too sure where to put this, so if it's in the wrong place, please feel free to move.

Does anyone have a dash cam who could give a little review, opinions etc. on it?

I'm toying with the idea of purchasing one for those 'just in case' scenarios. I don't want to spend an absolute fortune, but on the other hand I would like the day and night time recordings to be of a good quality. I've had a little look on dashcamtalk.com which is very informative of the Korean, Chinese and Taiwanese made dash cams and they have a good caparison table. Not sure if it's worth purchasing one with GPS or a dual camera for rear view recording as well.

Does anyone have any recommendations or can point me in the direction of some reviews? There's so much information on the web now and so many 'fake' dash cams around it's hard to decipher the good from the crap.

Many Thanks,

Rhian

Hi Rhian I'm not sure what brand but "riverlad" has one fitted in to his front screen after getting his A2 knocked in tescos. I'm sure tonight he will be along and tell the rest.
Cheers mike

I've been thinking about this for a while. Especially because I only have the minimum requirement liability insurance.
I was thinking about getting a GoPro for filming car stuff and possibly using it as a dashcam too but I know it's not really good for a dashcam because it's not made for that and the battery life compared to cameras made specifically for being used as a dashcam.

I bought the "Mini 0801 car cam with GPS, a 16 gig storage card and a free hardwire kit so you don't have to have it plugged into the cigarette lighter /power socket (Tom - TIMMUS, fitted the loom for me) it really is just "fit and forget" (until you need it that is).

It is virtually invisible (I mounted it behind the rear-view mirror).

It cost me £89 from eBay (via a company called Combi in Leicestershire.)

Search for mini 0801.

The picture is in HD too! this pone stores your position on GPS too and has MPH rather than Kilometers.

Well happy with it!!

I'm glad you're pleased with it, Steve. Having it wired to turn on and off with the ignition is nice - as you say, it really is just 'fit & forget'. :)

I made a mistake with the position of the camera though.
After I mounted it (well hidden behind the mirror) I noticed the mirror was constantly dimmed, silly me put the camera right where the mirror light sensor is.
I will be moving it tomorrow.

Ah yes, the auto-dimming mirror works by comparing the light level between the two sensors: forwards and behind. If the front sensor is blocked, it'll assume you're being dazzled from behind. An easy oversight to make when positioning the camera, but hopefully easily solved. :)

I have an RAC 07s which was expertly fitted by Tom, hidden behind the mirror ( not obscuring the auto dim sensor) Does what is ays on the tin. Fit and forget.

Sheap Dash Cam

I bought one of these for $16 incl. P&P just for fun. I dont expect it to have any quality but it helps me defining my requirements for the next Dash Cam.
Dash Cams are illegal in Sweden so I will not mount it permanently.

You need a permit for camera surveillance and it´s only given in cases where the need for surveillance is greater than the need for integrity.

wow.
We got a mini 0803, takes the occasional crash once every 9 months or so but its tiny :)

I hope it is only the camera that crashes every year!

I have had a mini 0826 for the last few months, apart from an incompatibility with Sandisk micro sd cards that caused occasional crashes (they work better with Samsung) it has been a good little camera great resolution and night time imaging. Slightly larger than the 0803 but still a small footprint.

Hi,

I have a Mini 801 as mentioned above, virtually invisible and "fit and forget" thanks to Tom installing it with an ignition live feed.

I have always thought about fitted a rear facing camera as well, but never got around to it. Thren I spotted one for £24 and so I thought "why not?"

It comes with a rechargeable battery pack and so it makes it even more flexible!

Just set it up indoors tonight to get to learn how it works and to fully charge it and it looks ok.

It has various formats ranging from a reasonably low res (to save storage space on the "Up to 32mg" SD card) up to full HD.

Has a movemet sensor, can record sound as well.

Seems to be well worth the £24 (I got mine from a site called Mobile Fun)
