Dash cup holders broken...

VAG fool

First A2 but not first VAG car, however not had one with this fault.
One holder opens but is broken, the other refuses to pop out.
Questions:
1. If I remove the broken one, will it help in getting access to releasing the other and
2. Is there a hard touch cup holder than I can get to replace them?
3. If soft touch is only choice, are they all the same at this age of Audi?

You remove that centre vent unit to get at both the cupholders. You have to get the radio headunit out to access the two screws for the vent unit, then there's a connection for the hazard switch to undo. The cupholder units just clip in from the back and although their fronts are removeable, they're all soft touch so some will be better than others. Cupholders do come up in the Market from time to time. @A2Steve @Clackers do you have a couple of working ones for sale between you?

Not at the moment sorry, cupholders always sell almost instantly, but I have another breaker arriving next week and will post the cupholders in the marketplace if they are any good.

I noticed that there are two different types of cup holder.
One with a little piece of rubber integrated into the rear half circular stopper and a version that comes without the rubber. I have one of each in my 90. I seem to remember that when removed the gear wheels inside are also a different colour plastic too. ?? Am I correct in this observation ??

Are they unique to the A2 or just generic Audi A4/6/8 of the period?
I would delve into my hooky copy of ETKA but its at work and running as a Win7 simulated "machine in a box" and as a result is read only.

Yes they are unique to the A2 unfortunately having an 8Z0 part number.

I've snagged a half decent working one off ebay, halfway there.

Re: part numbers, I do know from experience that VAG are very good at supplying identical parts with different model part prefixes, just because they were made in different factories which individually supplied plants assembling different models of cars.

While waiting for other parts to arrive, I got stuck into the centre console.
One cup holder was gummed up with sickly sweet smelling car perfume goo and responded well to a kitchen sink full of soapy scalding hot water.
The other is beyond repair, its been levered and various little lugs are broken off.
The suprise was that a bit of soft nailbrush action stripped the rotten soft-touch coating off the front panel really quickly :)
Unfortunately, it also showed up damage to the replacement holder I had bought online :(
Nothing that a bit of plumbing ABS cement wont fix.

I think the A2 cupholders were also used by Porsche in the 996 and early production boxer models...

My 8Z0 holders dont have a hole right through the tray as per your first pic. That's more like an A6 one (C5) iirc
