Dashcam Hardwire Kit

Hi

I'm thinking of buying a 'Hardwire Kit' something like the below (any recommendations please feel free). Question is which fuse would I tap into, as I only want power to the device when the ignition is on.

Kindest Regards

Just got my first dash cam too, presently using the cigs lighter socket for power but would like to have permanent wiring to the camera. Thinking about tapping into the OSS feed and having a short lead to just below the mirror to plug into the camera.

I'm considering a dashcam too - I think tapping into the OpenSky feed would be a good solution.

I think the dash cams ae fantastic, peace of mind if anything goes wrong, and if you connect it via an ignition live feed then you really do fit it and forget it. Everything is automatic and when the memory card is full it starts overwriting the oldest recordings first. So you don't even know they are there and mine is almost hidden behind the rear view mirror.

Tom (Timmus) wired mine in for me so I am not sure of which wires he spliced into.

I am not sure that the OSS feed will work because my OSS closes when I lock the car and so no ignition feed on that operation.

This is the one I have but you might be better looking for a UK supplier.

The picture quality is amazing (HD) and even at night the quality is surprising.

Hi,

I can't be sure if the OpenSky wiring can be used to source power. The feed for the motor is permanently live, and then there is a discrete (0 or 1) signal on a smaller core to activate the buttons on the interior light with the ignition. I'm not sure if you'll be able to pull even a small current through this signal cable, but it's worth looking into more! :)

Regards,

Matt.

Timmus wired mine for me.
It feeds from the area around the courtesy light and sunroof wiring. So there must be an ignition feed in there somewher.

I have wired two Mobius cams in the i3, although as 12v sockets are very close i haven't used a converter.

There are plenty on eBay for around £3. http://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/272070558436

You will also need a fuse adaptor so that you can run the cable to the A2 fusebox and tap into a selected fuse that switches on when the ignition is on. Something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/231806487249

Then find a earth near to the fusebox.

For Steve's A2, and for others that have the auto-dimming mirror, a feed can be taken from this. The mirror requires a switched ignition feed to activate when the car is in use, and hence, can be used to supply power to a dash camera at the same time. :)

Edit: I was sure I'd seen more information about using the mirror feed for a dash cam, and it's here in post #144 of Steve's holy grail thread. :p

Matt.

Matt, did you get any further looking into wiring a dashcam via the OSS feed? Thanks!

Hi,

I didn't, no. Running a wire down inside the A pillar trim to the fusebox by the driver's knee seems to be the way to go. :)

Thanks,

Matt.

@sailesh I've done this, will look out the info shortly. All four of our daily cars have this mod, all working fine.
#10 here...
