Debadged and better for it

Just cleaned my car for the first time since I bought it in September (it was pretty filthy) and couldn't believe how rubbish the model and engine badges are on the boot, all the finish coming off, so I took them all off, looks much better without them.

what did you use to take them off.did you have to remove any glue residue. I ordered my first a2 & requested no insignia. It does look beter without

I just used a sharp thin kitchen knife and ran it between the hard plastic of the badge and the bodywork, they are stuck on with foam strips so you can actually cut through the foam, they come off really easily. Any glue left on just rubs off with your fingers, then a quick rub with T-cut polish or similar (I used Autosol) to get rid of any residues. Its worth doing. I love the name of your village.

The best way to remove the model designation is to use a hairdryer whilst pulling gently with a butter knife or similar.

This ensures that no residue is left and also that no laquer comes off with the adhesive.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanx for the advice. Will have to do it at the weekend.I always get strange looks & grins when I mention steephill bumsturd.

Knives and paintwork do not mix, I used an old credit card and warm water, they came of really easily and the glue residuse left was minmal and that come of with a bit of elbiow grease.

yeah but with the hairdryer there is nothing left, trust me, my sons have debadged over 30 cars, so they know the routine :D

Hi Guys,

I am with colin; keep the cutlery in the house! However, I would also shred the old credit cards!

Badge removal is about the only use for all those plastic "loyalty" cards the supermarkets give out; same advantages as the credit card idea, but they are disposable.

For removing big mouldings (or things like number plates with sticky fixers!) which are on with the foam tape, try a length of thin wire- Stuff like Cheesewire is what you need- and work it along the moulding. Watch out for hidden clips, but they should come off lovely!

In all cases, a bit of heat will help.

Yeah I've de-badged too. Firstly I removed the 1.4 TDI badge then The "A" from A2 and replaced with RS for RS2, but now I have removed all but have kept the Rings... but having seen the picture with rings removed I'm thinking about removing those as well (as well as colouring the front set black).

Actually if anyone wants the badges I've removed from the car just P.M me (I'm sure someone will give them a happy home). Just send me a stamped address envelope. :D

I have only kept the S2 badge because when I got the A off, it turns out the previous owner must have tried to remove them and there was a great big scratch, so the 'S' portion covers it nicely until I can afford to have it done right.

I have debadged myself before, but on the A2 - not sure!!

There is something to be said for the clean lines and less clutter look, but can this also be tarnished with the 'Boy Racer - Corsa 1.2' image?! (i.e. pretending to uneducated joe public that beneath lies a throbbing V8).

I have touched on the idea myself, but for now the badges remain in situ. As an after thought though, I guess there is also some Driver satisfaction in keeping the badges where they are; I do smile to myself as some more powerful car owners trying to attach themselves to my rear bumper disappear in a cloud of black diesel smoke as I bury the right foot; the last image etched on their face is the '1.4 TDI' badge!! :p

Everything in place:

The second photo shows what happens when you choose to leave the 2 in place and remove the A only, replacing it with an S.

You can make out that they're different sizes and also, the 2 should be italicised. I was lucky in getting a complete S2 set from Germany (Neckarsulm actually), which has always made me wonder if Audi initially wanted to produce an S version of it's smallest car.

I will at some point post a photo showing the correct S2, with an A2 next to it.

Cheers,

Mike

Yeah - I noticed this as the S came from a S3 badge I had kicking around for years. I tried to make it as 'level' as possible, but to no avail.

Long term plan is to remove them all, but needs paint tidying first.

I think it looks good debadged as it makes the tailgate look much taller - a lot of cars put the model designation along a ridge line or some other feature on the bodywork but on the A2 its just plonked there. In the same way that fat people shouldn't wear horizontal stripes, the badges stop the tailgate looking too tall, they break the shape up, but as the whole thing about the A2 is the narrow tall look, taking the badges off makes them look much nicer. I think taking the Audi badge off is maybe a step too far though, without that it begins to look like a van.

My 'new' silver A2 is de-badged (probably from new) and I must say it looks a lot better for it. However when I get round to re-mapping the car, I might be tempted to find an S2 badge...
