Difficult to start when cold

Hi,

Our Daughter contacted me to say that her tdi was having problems starting mainly when cold.

I went over there this morning to try it myself and there was nothing wrong with the starter motor, the engine was cranking quickly but not firing.

My first thought was "Temperature Sender"

A quick VCDS scan confirmed it.

The reading was 30 degrees C and the car hasn't been used since yesterday afternoon.

This does prove that the first thing to check with starting problems is the coolant sender.

People often say "it can't be that the gauge reads correctly on the dash" but they forget that the sender has TWO circuits, one for the gauge and the other to feed the temperature to the ECU.

So if you are having starting problems (when hot or cold) then check the temperature sender.

If the engine is cold and the sender is "telling it" that the temperature is HOT, then the ECU will not set the correct mixture for a cold engine.
Vice versa for a hot engine, if the sender is telling the ECU that the engine is COLD it will enrich the mixture (too much).

They are not hugely expensive (always go for genuine Audi! since these senders are known to fail often, so you need the best and you can get your money back easier from Audi if and when they do!) And I am a confirmed eBay fan!!!

I know this is covered elsewhere on the forum, but it is well worth highlighting again, before people spend huge sums of money on the wrong parts.

Just to confirm that I fitted the sender and "hey presto" the car now starts on the button, even when cold!!!

Hi. My 1.4 TDI has just developed cold starting problems. Runs perfectly once started and still returns 60mpg It's covered 235000 miles and until recently always started first turn. It's had an Audi service up to 150000 and since a regular DIY service of oil and filters. I've never touched the fuel filter though. Does this also sound like a sensor problem too and is it a DIY job? Any guidance much appreciated..thanks Chris

Very helpful, my TDI is a pain to start when the ambient is low. The temp gauge on the dash is also intermittent. So looks like the sensor is failing/failed. New one ordered from Audi.

Temp sensor changed. Initially only a small improvement in starting, but after a week or so it's much better. Does the ECU have to learn new settings following a replacement?
Booked the petrol one in tomorrow for the same job as I am getting an over temp warning 30secs after start when cold.

which engine are you asking for?

Edit - have just seen your other post.

In the Tdi the coolant temperature sensor / sender is at the rear end of a plastic housing underneath the vacuum / fuel tandem pump - to get to it you need to remove the intercooler air return pipe and a small metal plate carrying the wiring loom down there.
