DIS Retro Fit questions

Hi All,

As you know i've wanted to fit DIS to my 1.6 FSI, and recently got a new cluster and stalk from e-bay from a matching car.

Its been sat in my office for a few days now, and temptation has got the better of me tonight, i had a quick play.

Well i took out the old cluster, and checked the setup.

Note only the two connectors, which match with the old cluster

I didn't want to get into it too much so i didn't do anything with the stalk yet. Now the new cluster has three inputs, so i guess the extra one is for the stalk control (need some guidance here) but i don't have the loom? Again any help here would be great?
New_Cluster.jpg
So just out of interst and to ensure it worked, i plugged in the new cluster, minus the extra connector and here we go!

RESULT!

I know there are two big things i still need to do before it can stay in place:
One - get the cluster re-coded to the car or it won't work
Two - get the millage changed to match that of my old cluster

Now, the question:
Does anyone know the part number for the extra loom needed? And is it easy to fit?
Is the fitting of the new stalk and bits simple?
How (my local audi are rubbish) can i get the cluster and millage changed?

I will happily do a 'how to guide' once i know the above.

Many Thanks,
Iain

Buy this loom -it's a retro-fit loom designed specifically for retro-fitting DIS to Audi A2s. I bought this one for my DIS project.

You local Audi dealership should be able to re-code the Cluster with your new car. As I was fitting mine with the help of Tony Aka Hotstuff we took it to his local friendly Audi dealership in Milton Keynes and they did the re-coding. We took the car to them with all of the cluster trim removed so that they wasted as little time as possible disassembling the trim!

To correct the mileage though you will need to find a local cluster re-programming agent/company. They'll plug it into a very expensive device and in a matter of seconds, will flash the mileage to the distance of choice. As you can imagine that technology is reserved for people who "repair" clusters. Again, we went to one in Milton Keynes.

Swapping the stalk and wiring it in requires removal of the Steering wheel and all the associated trim panels around it, and you'll need the cluster trim all removed in order to route the new DIS loom up.

What you will need to do though, is modify the wiring slightly into the DIS on the new loom so that the bulb monitoring circuit, and washer bottle level monitoring circuit, don't have a hissy fit about not being connected.

Where did you get it from? So simple to ask for the additional plug/wiring. There is not much to it .... two plugs/short lengths of wire. Go back to them and ask for it? So much about this on the A2OC ... just search for what you want. Key recoding is a definite Dealer job (about £60-£80) Mileage correction is non-Dealer and a Specialist Firm ..... you are looking at about £40, upwards ..... I wish that I had tested mine as soon as I had got it! .... It was faulty, and still is!

Thanks, any heads up on how to do that?

As you say when i plugged in the cluster it went mad about bulb monitoring and washer level....

Might check in with Guildford Audi, Five Oaks my local one is rubbish!

David, it was via e-bay all in was £50, but the chap said he had no wires at all?

I imagine the cluster and stalk you bought on eBay are second hand and were therefore previously installed in another A2? Audi integrate the loom for DIS as part of the main interior wiring harness on cars spec'd with DIS from factory. Therefore, Audi don't have a loom to serve the purpose where retro-fitting this option is concerned.

Tom, sorry i don't really get it? Does this mean i can't get a loom, or the loom is already there?

You are right about it coming from an A2, it was from a 2003 1.6 so identical to mine, except it has DIS.

The stalk is complete, both sides, wipers and indicators...

I'm struggling to quite get my head round how to cable it all in?

Cheers,
Iain

As I have said, there is not much to it (the "loom") You are talking about the connection of the stalk to the cluster .... only a few wires, and a short distance! You need ELSA-WIN ( Ebay ) for a circuit diagram. Just make your own "loom"

David

David,
I have ELSA Win, along with ETKA and VCDS, so hopefully ok there.

I assume this is the bit is ELSA...

And i have just ordered the lead mentioned above...

I think you need to earth the bulb and bottle sensor wires to disable them
Hotstuff can confirm.

It means you can't get a loom from Audi, as Audi don't make a suitable loom. You've therefore got the choice of making your own loom or buying a pre-made one from eBay, just like the one Dan's linked.

Basically, there's a huge, single loom that runs throughout the interior of your car; this is called the interior wiring harness. On cars spec'd with DIS from factory, Audi integrate the wiring for DIS as part of the main interior wiring harness. In fact, every A2 has an interior wiring harness that's custom made for the exact spec' of that particular car. There is therefore no redundant wiring or unused connectors in any A2. If you want to retro-fit something, you have to add the additional wiring.

(The one exception to the rule is that the looms from the door control modules to the wing mirrors carry wiring from heated mirror glass, whether the option is spec'd or not)

Where some options are concerned, you simply need to add an extra loom between connectors, but in other cases you need to splice (solder) additional 'branches' into the interior wiring harness at an appropriate point.

My DIS retrofitting service can be seen here: https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/service-offered-dis-supply-and-fit.29909/

Cheers,

Tom

Tom,

Thanks for the info, i think i am finally getting there.

The new cluster needs the additional wires into the grey plug for the stalk control to work, but i think thats it.

Just need to get grounding sorted out for washer bottle and lights...

Cheers,
Iain

Has anyone retro fitted the dis? With that ebay connector?

Im about to do this and could do with some pointers?

Hi Enzo, this IS possible, but requires recoding via VCDS, it's defo not just a case of plug and play. I know @timmus has done this a number of times, so would be a good person to ask.
