DIS Upgrade

I've been a busy boy over the last few days

I bought a TDI DIS instrument cluster of @A2Steve a couple of week ago, and its been sat tawnting me since it arrived, well today was the day to get on with it.

I've been having a general read up as there are a few hurdles to jump through

The first thing was to make up a test rig so I could power the DIS cluster on the bench. I already have a bench rig made up for 'adjusting' ECU's, so this has been added too with the addition of the green and blue sockets from an old A2 wiring loom (thanks @Sarge ). Wiring was figured out with a bit of help from Google.

The cluster fired up with just a slight problem of 'FUSE' being displayed in the cluster miliage, a further bit of googling and a further +12v wire was connected and this removed the 'fuse' warning.

A few wires connected to ground and the warning messages are gone - all as per the cluster wiring diagrams

Next read out the SKC codes from the old and new clusters

Then VCDS to code the cluster to my A2, this all went well

Next adjust the kilometers of the DIS cluster to the same as the original cluster

power down the DIS cluster and power up again, bingo correct miliage

Power down and go trial fit it to the car

cluster power up fine, miliage is correct

Next code the keys to the DIS cluster, this all went well.

Start car - perfect

Made up the loom to connect the DIS stalk to the DIS cluster, up / down rocker and reset all operate the cluster as they should - result

Just ordered a replacement screen for the DIS display, soldering job when it arrives. Cluster is stripped down awaiting the display screen arriving

will report back when screen arrives and solder in place

Cheers,
Paul

So you have gone from small DIS to Full DIS? I take it that further wiring is required behind the cluster to support the third plug. Is this an off the shelf loom or one that requires fabrication?

I believe there are off-the-shelf looms, but they don't take LHD vs RHD into account, nor do they take Gen 1 vs. Gen 2 stereos into account, nor are they well made, nor is their earthing method particularly elegant. As such, in all the countless DIS upgrades that I've done for club members, I've always fabricated the loom myself, with the precise spec' of the car in mind.

Tom

Yes mini DIS enabled on the std cluster through vcds effectively telling the cluster that it is in a 1.2 TDI to full DIS
Yes there is additional wiring from the Grey plug which is only fitted on the DIS cluster
I made up a suitable wiring loom which is not a big loom as the run from the stalk to the back of the cluster is very short
Tom as stated above that an off the shelf loom is available but to be honest this is not my way of doing things if I can make my own not to mention that reasons Tom stated of not fitting properly and quality issues

My personal dilemma is that I had already fitted the DIS stalk some years ago and used it to control the volume and mute of my pioneer touch screen head unit. It cant do both so I have another solution for the HU controls
Touch screen is fine when the car is stopped or for the odd control but the common ones like volume up down and mute I find sub optimal as a touch screen only and much prefer the physical switch not to mention the close proximity of the stalk to the steering wheel

Sounds like you have a strong need for a multi-function steering wheel Paul. Another retrofit :)
Alas, with the exception of a few expensive Pioneer units, the Audi MFSWs wil only control Audi stereos ...and Paul's got an Androidy thingamybob.

Cheers,

Tom

No I have a pioneer touch screen HU
However I also have a three spoke wheel which as far as I know doesn’t have a multi function option
There are other wheels options but all of which I’m not over keen on in conjunction with the A2 interior
I have the TT wheel gear lever pedals covers etc which are all in keeping with what Audi would have done if they ever made an S2 version

I have an idea on the HU controls based on a binnacle on the LH side of the steering wheel cowl

Could voice control be an option for the head unit? Didn't some head units also come with a control stalk that was fitted onto the steering column ( pre android )?

Whoaw, nice work there.
Going from small to full DIS is very interesting.
But do you need to add more sensors to the car aswell, or are all things/information already there sort of saying?

The bulb monitoring will not be operational but does not work well with led and hid bulbs anyway
I have already fitted a washer bottle with the level sensor so this will be connected up to the full DIS in due time
Other than that everything else appears to be already there

Why did you use to get the SKU always fails for me? Do you have a link to what you used?

I used vagcommander. Bought the cable from eBay some years ago to get the skc for programming keys

Worked a treat in the instrument cluster

I’ve got voice control on the pioneer and the number of times I give up and just type in the address when using the satnav is unreal
I already have a crown mounted binnacle that controls certain HU functions just need to add the volume up down and mute to it
Will be sorted this weekend
Pictures to follow

I am hoping to do this upgrade to my 2004 1.4Tdi, I picked up a set of clocks yesterday 8Z0 920 980 Q from a 2004 Tdi along with the grey plug to go with them and the wiper switch complete with the 6 pin plug to go with it, I have Vag com and Vag tacho so am able to do the coding, I added Cruise Control a few weeks ago.
Can anyone tell me what else needs done apart from making a loom to connect the 3 wires (and brown one to earth) from the selector and reset swithes on the wiper stalk to the grey plug on the clocks and earthing the Red/White wire to defeat the washer bottle switch is there anything else that needs power or earthed to make this work, did get the bulb failure warning unit but not intening to fit it, any help would be much appreciated

Does this mean that it is relatively easy for an A2 to be clocked?

That’s interesting, the car I offered to purchase from a garage was quoted as having done 37k…. when I checked the mot there was a discrepancy, when I mentioned that on the forum…. The car mysteriously was removed from the dealership website??
Buyer beware ???????????

I work with A2 instrument clusters regularly, especially now that they're old enough for faults to be appearing. I therefore do mileage correction frequently. With the correct software and hardware, it's not a complex process, but I don't share the details in public precisely because it facilitates fraudulent behaviour by unscrupulous dealers.
Thankfully, MOT history prevents cars being clocked by more than a year's worth of driving.

Cheers,

Tom

I purchased a spare instrument cluster and modded it with 3dcolormfd: photos
Works really well.
The extras I like:
- oil level
- tempomat on/off and speed notification
- built in error scan (vcds like) and error delete option
- webasto on/off toggle
- oil temp

Adding real time oil pressure and turbo boost info is still in progress.
