DIS washer fluid low animation and BOING

This went off the other day just as we ventured off on an hour long journey, and had got on the motorway. WTF?! BOING, animation... Yeah, ok I need washer fluid. Animation stays there forever and the BOING is louder than God and chimes in when it feels like it every now and then!!!

Thought I was lucky to have the notification at first. I was wrong. Does it do anyone else's head in?

It is the loudest warning gong on God's good Earth.
What we did was take off the cowling and put some tape over the grille above the sounding speaker. It muffles the sound somewhat but you can still hear it.

It's insane isn't it?! An hour up the motorway and back was bad enough with the washer bottle animation constantly going off in my face, without the BOING shouting at me like an angry German, disappointed at my lazy English attitude to replenishing the fluid.

Try using a piece of bluetac this would muffle the sound better than tape if there is space between the cowl cover.

Ha ha! When this happens, and if you're not going to NEED the washers again before you get a chance to top up, just squirt-squirt-squirt to get the level down below the trigger level. I think that you then only get the one warning on start-up and not the bone-jarring repeats.

The possible cause is evaporation from the bottle - so many A2's have lost the caps over the years allowing the screen was to magically disappear.

Is it a maximum 2 litre capacity washer bottle Mike - that normally doesn,t last long with enthusiatic use. :)

The washer bottle sensor is the simplest thing in the world. It's just two prongs submerged in the washer fluid. When the level gets low enough, the two prongs are no longer submerged and the visual/audible warning goes off.
The problem is that, as you go down a hill, all the remaining washer fluid runs to the sensor side of the tank, submerging the prongs again. As such, the cluster thinks you've refilled the tank. Then, when you get back to level ground or go up a hill, the fluid flows away from the sensor and the prongs are once again exposed, causing the warning to go off again.
It's a slightly daft design. Having an additional sensor at the top of the tank (or applying some electrical hysteresis) would have prevented this problem. However, Groot's suggestion also solves the problem. If the warning keeps going off, just use more of the washer fluid such that there's no longer enough in the tank to submerge the sensor even when going downhill.

I would think that "Timmus" may be able to turn this off ?. :)

Yes, I am able to turn this sensor off completely. On my own car, I've just reduced the volume of the beep for all warnings; I don't like being given a heart attack every time I need to refuel!

Again, I must know nothing about my A2..........Ive never had this happen to me in mine..........Is there a list on here what the A2 has regarding these type of things..

Luckily we don't have a similar solution to Mercedes. During the wintertime you have to use washer fluid with the correct amount of anti freeze additive. The washer fluid sensors in Mercedes are unbelievably sensitive, if the alcohol content in the washer fluid is to low or to HIGH it will throw error alarm.

Think of Mercedes sensor combined with our Beeper!

Only cars that left the factory with DIS have the washer bottle level monitoring. Unless both have been retrofitted, of course!
