So, Dual Mass Flywheels.

I've read alot on here about the worry of them on the 90's and a couple who have indeed had problems.
Whilst this is my first VAG, I've never had a car I couldn't do a Single Mass Flywheel conversion to.

I spent some time looking at the Ibiza Cupra Diesel a while ago and it's a very common conversion. For example: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SEAT-Cord...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item33649d270b
and here: http://www.darksidedevelopments.co....-tdi-single-mass-flywheel-conversion-kit.html

However I can't find one for the 1.4 TDi.

Just thought it would be nice to have one lined up ready for when the clutch goes. Two birds an' all that!

Hi Chris
I think Mike (Skipton) looked into this at great length a few months ago - he has a TDi 90 which is remapped to 125PS with peak torque over the maximum rated torque of the clutch/flywheel assembly so he had need for a more substantial solution. From what I remember, he wasn't able to find one from any VAG part, or off the shelf from the reputable clutch/flywheel manufacturers.

Well I've just found out that the 1.4PD 90 has the same clutch as the 1.9PD 90,100 and 110.....

I was told its there for a reason
I know that, but 90% of it's purpose is down to emissions control (EGR anyone).
I know they also act as a stabiliser, hense my main reason for asking others for any experience as all of mine has been with 4-pots and V6's. Neither perfectly balanced, but leaps and bounds better that a 3!

But then I have no doubt that that is why my little Audi idles so damn high. I mean, 1k!!!! that's a quarter of the way to peak factory power!

I was told it was to remove vibration, Funny how most 75's make 80+bhp anyway and they seem to do without one.
You usually get vibration through the pedal if its worn.
Yep was told they were akin clutchs, I just hadnt needed to improve on what was in there.
so plenty of stronger clutches out there if you want to increase the horses.

Have fun with your two birds

Precisely. Like I say, done a few conversions on other cars with no ill effects!

No, no. Identical. 228mm diameter. 28 piece spline. Same part number!

Very interesting indeed. Having a 75 with a brand new OE clutch, it's not for me, but for the 90 drivers out there this could prove the business.

Good find, Chris.

May be worth checking with Darkside eng as they list a flywheel kit for the 02J gearbox which is used on our A2 TDi's - http://www.darksidedevelopments.co....ywheel-clutch-kit-for-vw-02j-5-speed-tdi.html

Apologies for going slightly off topic but does the 1.6 have a single mass or dual like a 90?

Bit of a zombie-thread-bump, but clutch starting to act up on my ATL and the DMF has been cluncking since purchase and I'm trying to find out if there is any known single-mass-flywheels to fit? The ebay kit mentioned seems tempting but have no idea of the quality. Do the German forums have any ideas for SMF or they sticking with DMF on ATLs?

I spoke to a mechanic about these on Wednesday, apparently with a dual mass flywheel you can make the crankshaft and the gearbox casing lighter etc , if you fit a standard flywheel to one of these cars you risk these items breaking as they are designed for that flywheel not a standard one. Cars which never had a DMF have a stronger crank/gearbox design.

I don't think the mechanic's answer was quite correct.
In the case of A2 TDis, both the 75 and 90 have the same crankshaft and 02J gearbox (with different ratios)
The 90 has a DMF because the higher power and torque results in torsional activity within the drive train which can cause excessive gear chatter and wear.
These torsional 'spikes' are caused by the crankshaft flexing under load and if you could freeze frame the end of the crank as it runs through one of the critical speed ranges you would see the crank does not spin smoothly but rotates in 'fits and starts' - which is what causes the gear chatter etc.
It is however correct that heavy flywheels and 'beefy' gearboxes with high inertia components all help to dampen torsional activity.
