Anybody ever heard or had any experience of 'TDi Tuning Boxes': http://www.mrhoot.com/default.asp ?

It looks like very good value but how good or safe for the car can it really be without the appropriate engine tuning/remapping?

Stuart, just had a look at the site. On paper the box looks impressive.

The questions I'd have are:

1)are the 20-30% gains in performance achievable with a 'mild tune'
which this seems to be as it only alters fueling.
2)what effect does it have regarding clouds of black smoke under
acceleration.
3)they don't mention anything about how it affects mpg.

Cheers
Shaf

Hi Shaf,
Not sure about the answers to (1) and (3) but I have heard that it does produce more of a cloud of black smoke! Apparently it also can cause the engine management warning light to come on as it makes the car think that there is a malfunction with the fuel intake. I'm not sure why anyone would want this product except for the cost saving against a proper remap!

My thoughts too, I wouldn't entertain it unless it was tried and tested.

The worrying thing is that if these boxes are easily plugged into and removed from a car what about when buying a used car, you don't know if it's been run on one of these boxes, as they say it's not detectable.

They may be perfectly fine to use but they are an unknown entity.

For a more expensive (374 pound) view on the same material, look here:
http://www.dieselchiptuning.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=25&products_id=43
They 'promise' increase of 30Nm in torque and a 15hp in power.

Look at their FAQ (http://www.dieselchiptuning.com/catalog/faq.php) for more general comments. According to them, there's no increase in smoking and fuel efficiency could go up by 3 to 4 mpg.

I've seen lots of these companies, both large and small, that offer these 'powerbox' thingies. In all countries, for all kinds of money. It seems well accepted. I'd say: if clouds of smoke come from your exhaust: throw away the 100 pound box and live on. Otherwise: enjoy the difference for such a small amount of money...

I'm still waiting for my own A2 to be chiptuned 'regulary' by my dealer (through the importing agency which in turn should speak with Abt Sportsline). After a 4 month wait I fear that they're not going to do it (my engine has code BHC, not AMF as any pre 08-2003 diesel has). And if they do fail, I will probably go for one of the boxes and fit it myself.
Hsssh, don't tell my lease company I might do that ;)

Don't like the sound of this TDi Tuning Box - not sure how it has an "inbuilt allowance in the ECU for winter fuel properties" ??

I can thoroughtly recommend the 'box' that SWIV links to. Have had this on our last Audi - a 110hp A4 TDi. Put the power up to 137 bhp and actually improved fuel consumption (49 to 53 mpg). The driveability of the car changed completely and overtaking at 50 to 70 was fun!!!

Have also installed a similar device on our motorcaravan supplied by http://www.tuningbox.com/ with similar increases in power and improved fuel consumption.

Both these 'tuning boxes' were recommended by a local garage that specialises in performance upgrades.

Have now sold the A4 - if anyone is intersted in the tuning box for the 110 engine, mail me at [email protected]

From previous posts (and my sig) you're probably aware that I've had our 1.4TDi 'superchipped' This has put BHP up from 75 to 108. At over £500, it has been worth it but, the least value for money of our chipped vehicles mentioned above
