Does anyone sometimes have too much hate in the love hate of an A2...

Odd title and in a bit of a pickle really. I have a 90TDI that has been a labour of love when bought (a basic car with faults that I made into the almost dream spec).

I have added bose, RNSe, Cruise, rear parking sensors, rear cup holder, sports heated leather (no lumber as early seats but leather is very good), MYP gearbox, new flywheel recent oil chain and refurb turbo but recent niggles have made me question our relationship!! It was bought as a commuter car and it has not disappointed to date. Near on 90k miles in my ownership and never really done much wrong but recent steering rack, wheel bearing fault and stupid calliper sliders threads failing when removing them have reminded me that its an old car that needs love. I vowed I would never sell this car and this is not a stealth advert but a call for help / firm voices telling me to grow up and focus on the good times we have had!!

The trouble is when looking at alternatives I can't really see anything that offers cheap around motoring etc. I have tried to find some replacement hubs / knuckles to do a brake upgrade to afford the setup of calliper carriers to alleviate the problem but not the easiest to source really and don't want to keep throwing money at th problem. I am lucky that I can do most of the work myself so that is a bonus but time and attempts to trim the fleet down mean that it may just be at the stage when I am expecting too much from the car.

Anyone else been here and how did you tackle the quandary. I know if I sell I will replace with another Audi but welcome any suggestions on how to perhaps rejuvenate this car a little as I spend a lot of time in it and need it to feel "together" if that makes sense.

Sorry for the bizarre post, but I cant be the only owner that has been here.

Been there more than once. Best thing I’ve done recently was to treat the car to a full valet inside and out. As much as I can do it myself it feels like a lot of effort (again) after fixing everything else. After having this done it feels like I have been given a new car and fall in love all over again.

£90 well spent as changing car always costs a lot more!

Just my 2p worth.

Good call although interior is very clean!! It just feels tired (soft touch worn etc). I question my initial question too as just done 350 miles in it and it was comfortable and easy.

Its akoya too which is a colour I love and think looks at home with modern day cars too. When I put the Audi A1 steering wheel and A1 wheels on it refreshed the look but that is easy bolt on stuff and feel it perhaps needs a little more.

I am considering trying to find a vehicle interior specialist to see about reviving the interior and even putting sound deadening in it to make it sound less like driving in a coke can!! Ok I know its not bad but the door clang on closure just sounds a little weak compared to modern day cars. I would also perhaps consider a DAB radio integrated into RNSe but even the RNS is on borrowed time really as believe no more map updates after 2020.

Decisions decisions.

As a car enthusiast there will always be the temptation to want another car. Having had all sorts of cars over the years, the A2 really is the best all rounder. There’s no doubt that there are better modern cars now that can do what the A2 does, but there’s one vital thing missing, character. They are all so yawn ?

Having seen your car in the flesh Paul, I’m convinced you’ll kick your self if you let it go. It’s a pretty special car and as you say, it’s been good to you for 90,000 miles and you bought it as a diamond in the rough.

I suppose on those days when you crave a little more oomph or refinement, hop in another of the fleet?

“Character” is exactly right in my book an ingredient that has been engineered out in so many modern superminis.

they send you round the bend and back that's for sure, was on the way to pick some bits up the other day and the exhaust decided to snap:mad:, but it will get a new one and will be forgiven

No sooner do I get the steering rack swapped wheel bearing goes. Not a big issue swapped over with big ideas on showering some affection on it in an attempt to rekindle my love for it the aircon has given up. No fault codes and all pressure gauges read as they should as well as temp sensors so looks like the compressor has got bored with working. Pulleys available for reasonable money so may try swapping that first. Its testing my patience right now. I mean how much pampering does it need to start behaving!
