Does size really matter...?

Hi...

I've just bought a lovely ice blue 1.4 tdi SE, and am thrilled with it...especially having come from a 170 A-Class Elegance.

I need to replace my tyres, and am thinking of changing to 195/50/16 rather than 185/50/16 simply because they are much cheaper, and readily available since they are of a more common size.

Has anybody done this? They are only a fraction bigger, and I don't see that there would be a rubbing problem. There seems to be enough room under there. Am i mising anything..?

Please let me know.

Thanks,

Alan

Hello Alan and welcome.

Go for it - I know of 1 person who uses 205/45 tyres on his SE-spec 16" wheels with no issues. Audi will give you loads of reasons they chose a 185 section tyre and even certain tyre sellers will say that you should stick to this size.

One word though, you should start off by replacing the rear axel, as a pair. It is illegal to have wider front tyres than the back and so you must start off in this way, unless you intend to swap all 4 at once.

Cheers,

Mike

Welcome,

I have been using 205/45/16 and they have not rubbed; I changed for the same reasons 185s where hard to get hold of.

however...

A few weeks back mytyres.co.uk had 185 conti premium contact for less than £50 each so a bought a full set; a local tyre fitter charges £10 to fit (each) so for £60 which is £30 less than I was quoted by the same tyre fitter.

From my experance changing to the wider tyre had a noticable effect on MPG I lost 4-7 mpg and they did not last as long (milage) but did stick like sh** to a blanket and look very good.

Regards
