door panels- mid section?

DJ 190

A2OC Donor
I am currently having the top section of the door panels and the speaker housing/door pocket sections covered in "Stratos" leather .... (a light grey). The arm-rests have already been done in this material and they look superb! That will only leave the middle section as original. I would like to ask for your help/advice in two directions ..... Firstly, that middle, fabric section is quite grubby and could do with a good clean. The ideal time is before refitting the leather-covered sections. Now I had thought of making a slurry of washing-up powder and applying it. I would then let it dry and brush/wash it off. It's messy, but has been effective in the past! I would like your help in suggesting any other effective cleaner, please? Maybe a proprietary product? Now, another possibility would be to cover the middle section, too, in suede? What do you think of that idea? I seem to recall someone on the A2OC having that done? Am I right? AND, someone in Germany, too? Oh well, all this stems from finding a FANTASTIC firm that does leather work! .... they did those arm-rests for just £100, all-in! I've been delighted with the work! ( Did you know that standard hides have to be thinned first, and that this action is called "skiving"?" Oh, there seems to be a potential problem with perforating the leather that will cover the speaker grills, so as to allow sound transmission? Any ideas? Thanks for your help! ..... David

Hi David,

Have you got some photos of your doorcards as they stand?
I find AutoGlym high foaming shampoo does a great job of cleaning the door card fabric, by the way. It comes in a spray can.

Cheers,

Tom

Don't attempt to cover the speaker covers, simply remove them by clicking them out then have the trimmer do his thing and refit the speaker covers afterwards.

Well, if the actual speaker covers are not faced in leather, then they will be recessed and you will get the contrast between the leather and the shiny plastic of the cover. There will also be a slight colour variation. I thought about a device that would punch a series of, say, 5mm holes in an regular grid pattern? If the holes were sharply cut, then that should look acceptable? Now what about the suede covering of that centre section? The door panels have been salvaged from my previous A2. .... that is what has made this an easier project to handle ...They were a darker grey, and if I also cover the mid-section, then I can completely build up all the leather/suede recovered sections of the donor panels, without having to immediately remove my existing door panels. I could then replace all the door panels in one go! What do you think?

Show us your doors :)

David - Also have grubby grey door panels and am intrigued by what the leather looks like if you can post a few pics. Price sounds reasonable - interested to know who you used.

tks
