Door striker plate adjustment

My Akoya silver TDI has always had quite a bit of wind noise on drivers door since I have owned it. Have used Gummi Pfledge on all rubbers and surrounds to no effect several times. Upon closer inspection I have noticed that the window rubber on the vertical part of the door rubber which closes on the black pillar, doesn't fit as tightly as the other side of the car with about a 1mm or less gap.

Would moving the striker plate/door lock help to pull in the door more tightly to the door frame? And if that is worth trying what are the sizes and types of the bolts torx or similar I would need? Any suggestions most appreciated as although it isn't really loud its quite noticeable when radio isn't on or air-con!

It is more likely to be the window frame not being put back on correctly.

someone may have taken it off to repair the lock at some stage.

check the door gaps you might find that it is just the window frame not sealing properly.

The door gaps all look okay and same as the other doors to be honest. If it is the window frame then that would have to be taken off I take it to improve things? Nice to see you back on the forum again Steve!

thanks for that.
You could try slackening off the bolts that hold the window frame in and moving the frame in at the top slightly. It is a bit hit and miss.

When I had this issue I was able to pull the window frame at the top in towards me while driving and that removed the noise (just while I was pulling) that should prove that it is just the frame and not the door.

Cheers Steve! When I get a little bit of time free I will try pulling the window frame whilst driving and go from there! Will let you know if its the frame or door!

1 - Door subframe
q Dimension -a- = 5 mm + 1.5 mm.
q Use setting gauge to set dimension -a- → Fig..
q Dimension -b- = 5 mm - 2 mm.
q Dimension -c- = 9.5 mm ± 1 mm.
q Dimension -d- = 8.5 mm ± 1 mm (distance to B-pillar).
2 - Door window
q Dimension -b- = 5 mm - 2 mm.
q To check dimension -b- lower window completely into door seal.
q Mark lower edge of door seal on window using a fine coloured pen.
q Open door window and measure dimension -b- from top edge of window to marking made earlier.
3 - Trim for C-pillar
q Dimension -e- = 15.5 mm ± 1 mm
q Dimension -f- = 9 mm ± 1 mm
4 - Front door
q Dimension -g- = 31 mm ± 1 mm
q Can only be measured with door trim removed.

Making improvised setting gauge
Make improvised setting gauge -1- from plastic or plywood according to the specified dimensions.
l Dimension -a- = 5 mm.
l Dimension -b- = approx. 30 mm
If the door subframe is correctly adjusted, the gauge should make contact with the door window and roof trim moulding when applied at a point approx. 100 mm from B-pillar.

Thanks for all the great info there Steve. I am having a new battery fitted by Halfords tomorrow, a Yuasa110 which is the same size and ampage of original as the old one doesn't hold a charge very long.

l Rear door must be adjusted if this has not already been done.
l Dimension -A- = 3.5 mm ± 0.5 mm
l Dimension -B- = 4 mm ± 0.5 mm
l Dimension -C- = 3.5 mm ± 0.5 mm

Note
t Use setting gauge -3371- to check panel gaps.
t The shut lines and panel gaps can be adjusted by loosening the hinge bolts and moving the door.

Note
Markings for the precise adjustment of the door are located on the striker plate and on the B-pillar.
Slacken bolts -1-.
Move striker plate -2- until door shell is flush with contour of body.
Tighten bolts.
l Tightening torque: 20 Nm.

Use this adjustment only to adjust door inwards or outwards, not vertically.

Again a big thanks for the detailed information there Steve and I am sure will also be a great help to others on the How
 
What I found when putting on new door skins is that the positioning varies even outside of the build tolerances in the factory...ie I had to extend the hole size of the bottom hinges to allow for movement to move the door in as I couldnt get enough adjustment without.
 
It was just a mistake. There were so many posts. He meant you as well, you provided the detail.
Hi Steve, I have checked the door by pulling the top part of the door trim inwards whilst driving and makes no difference to the wind noise so sounds like it is the door rather than the top part of the frame. Many thanks again for the earlier advice.

I had a gap when I first got mine and I thought it was the strike plate too. It turns out In mine that when I adjusted from the hinges it then fit properly and wind noise all gone. I’m glad I didn’t move the strike plate or adjust the window frame.
